No. 25 ranked Lady Cards stay tied for district lead

The mission has been clear for the Lady Cards’ softball team after tying the season series against fellow district leader Hallettsville a few weeks ago. Their goal: win out for the rest of the regular season and give themselves a chance to either tie for the district championship or win it if the Brahmettes stumble a bit to end the season. To prevent their own stumbles on the way to that goal, the Lady Cards made sure to play solid games against Industrial on Tuesday, April 4 and then again on Monday, April 10 against Tidehaven. Offense and defense came together perfectly for Columbus as the 25th ranked team in the TGCA poll won both games by large margins.

Vs Industrial, W, 9-1

The Lady Cards got a quality performance at the plate from their batters as several hitters had strong games in the big victory. While Columbus kept things moving on the offensive side of the ball, they shut things down for the opponents’ offense as the pitching of Mayson Post and Karlee Mathis helped lead the Lady Cards to a one hit, one run game. Post pitched four innings and finished her start with four strikeouts.

Post not only made an impact on the mound, but also had some quality atbats as well. She finished with four runs batted in after getting hits in two of her three appearances at the plate. Madyson Carter had a team-leading three hits after nailing three of her four chances.

Vs Tidehaven, W, 15-2 Columbus made sure to take care of things early against Tidehaven as they made up the game that was postponed due to stormy conditions on its scheduled date last Thursday. The Lady Cards started by scoring four runs in the opening inning after allowing just one run by their district opponents. Tidehaven scored another run in the second inning to cut the lead to 4-2 heading into the bottom of the second. Columbus created some distance in that inning with three more runs to create an imposing lead over Tidehaven. Not only did the Lady Cards finish the game without allowing another run by their opponents, but they also sealed the deal with an eightrun inning in the fourth to reach double digits for the seventh time this season. Columbus shut down Tidehaven in the top of the fifth, forcing the mercy- rule finish.
