A free program focused on necessary legal information will be held at the Weimar Public Library at 1 Jackson Square on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to a ribbon cutting for Prosperity Bank – Mortgages by Lindsey in front of the Stafford Opera House at 425 Spring Street.

GARWOOD – The school year has reached its latter stages after students at Colorado County schools have surpassed the 100th day of classes. Each school celebrated the mark differently, but the students at Garwood Elementary were challenged to show some kindness with charitable donations.

Today, Wednesday, Feb. 14, is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Lenten season. St. Anthony students perform Mass this morning at 8:15 a.m. During Lent, students will pray the Stations of the Cross weekly, and will attend Adoration on Wednesdays.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB GIRLFRIENDS HELP HOST PAINTING PROJECT

Several county churches are holding Ash Wednesday events today, Feb. 14, as well as services throughout Lent season. The following is not an exhaustive list of events happening in Colorado County. Contact churches unlisted here for their Ash Wednesday service information as well as Lent season initiatives.

COLUMBUS – First Baptist Church is hosting a 12-week study of the book of Ephesians in the Bible starting on Feb. 15. The nearly two-hour session begins at 1 p.m.

The Green Door Fund for Workforce Development and Education, an internal program of the Fayette Community Foundation, is committed to providing job awareness, training and career opportunities to local students and young adults in Fayette County and the surrounding rural region.

The Fayette Community Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2024 Scholarships, with a deadline of April 1.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Chamber of Commerce is looking for high school students eager to serve their community as junior ambassadors. The seventh annual Junior Ambassador Scholarship Award is now accepting applicants.

Arts for Rural Texas proudly presents A Riot of Color: Embracing Expressive Chaos, featuring the bold and brilliantly charged works of Jeremy Serna. Serna, recognized for his mastery in transforming canvas into worlds of color, form, and life, brings a unique perspective to the world of impressionist art.

The filing period for candidates in municipal and local elections will end on Friday, Feb. 16. 

While winter is the ideal time to prune trees, pruning after recent droughts and freezes may cause more damage than good this year.

The Wellness Council of Greater Colorado Valley is celebrating the positive impact acts of kindness have on everyone’s health and well-being through their Random Acts of Kindness awareness campaign in February. The co-sponsor for this Campaign is Columbus Physical Therapy, a group that is known for their kindness to all their patients.

Colorado County Habitat for Humanity is presenting four free financial classes in partnership with local banks and businesses. The classes will be in February and March covering basic financial topics like money values and influences to spending and savings plans to credit reports and scores and building financial futures. Everyone is welcome to attend.

EAGLE LAKE – The Eagle Lake Police Department celebrated some milestones over the past week as they welcomed a new member to the force and celebrated two current members completing further training in the field.

COLUMBUS – The St. Paul Lutheran Church has found a creative way to allow as many people as possible to follow the tradition of Ash Wednesday to commemorate the first day of Lent in the Catholic faith. On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the church will offer ashes for mobile believers in a drive-thru line at the drop-off area of the Lighthouse at 201 Veterans Drive.

SCHULENBURG – The Stanzel Family Foundation reaffirms its commitment to community development by awarding grants to two impactful organizations, the Fayette County Community Theatre and Building Resilience Inclusion Diversity & Growth thru Education or BRIDGE. These grants will support the operations of both organizations as they strive to create inclusive and vibrant communities through the arts and connection.

COLUMBUS – The Live Oak Art Center will be displaying some of the Columbus Independent School District’s artistic submissions into the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo starting on Feb. 7 and continuing throughout the month.
