SMCS COMPETES IN ACADEMIC MEET

HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston University recently released their list of students that received academic merits from the prior semester. Many students that originated from Colorado County are featured on the list due to their classroom performance at the university. The following is a list of the students from the county that reached Sam Houston’s Dean’s List and President’s List.

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved more than $20.6 million in local park grants, a near record, to help create and enhance outdoor recreational opportunities.

AUSTIN – The Texas Public Safety Commission, along with Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw, presented two William P. Clements Excellence Awards along with several Lifesaving Awards, a Director’s Award and one Unit Citation, at the PSC meeting on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the DPS Headquarters in Austin.

SENIORS TOGETHER HAS LARGEST GATHERING IN ITS HISTORY

BRENHAM – Cub Scout Pack 312 was well represented at the district race on Feb. 17. There were 45 derby racers in attendance with George Bergfeld, Jr. taking 1st place in Webelos and 4th place overall.

Invasive species cause many negative impacts to the Texas landscape, from the displacement of native trees to potentially wiping out entire species. Because of their widespread impact, Texas A&M Forest Service is taking great lengths to help mitigate their impacts and taking time to highlight those efforts during National Invasive Species Awareness Week.

LA GRANGE – The Colorado Valley Quilt Guild hosted their premier competition of the year with the “Best Little Quilt Show in Texas” with several quilters and artists competing for the best quilt in each category.

March marks the observance of Save Your Vision Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health and encouraging proactive steps to preserve our sight. Some of those proactive measures include improving access to eye care, promoting regular eye check-ups and providing resources for people in need.

SMCS STUDENTS CELEBRATE BEGINNING OF LENT

It’s Book Fair time at SAS! The Ignatius Book Fair, “Fostering Faith, One Chapter at a Time,” will kick-off after this weekend’s masses. 

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB MEMBERS CREATE CARDS FOR FAMILIES

The Columbus Tractor Supply will host a backyard poultry event on Feb. 24, providing customers with the opportunity to learn how to care for and manage an at-home flock.

Columbus High School will soon play host to a local Black History Banquet to celebrate African Americans and their contributions to the arts and the country. The event is scheduled for March 2 at the Columbus High School cafeteria at 7 p.m.

H-E-B is excited to kick off the 11th annual H-E-B Quest for Texas Best, a competition created to find the best Texas-made products. Submissions for the competition will be accepted Feb. 21 through April 4.

COLUMBUS – The girls of the Boys and Girls Club enjoyed a new experience as the GirlFriends group took them on a trip to the Robert Wells Jr. Airport on Feb. 12.

The Colorado County Beef and Forage Committee is prepared to host their upcoming Beef and Forage 5-Hour CEU Educational Event scheduled for Monday, Feb. 26.
