Columbus store celebrates milestone anniversary

WEIMAR – When new city manager Richard Whitten accepted the position in early March, he solved a months-long concern as the city had been without a manager since June of 2023. With his hire, Weimar has brought in a professional that values the advancement of members under his leadership.

The Colorado County Sheriff’s office has been actively trying to ward off auto crimes in the county as they have dealt with recent reports of truck thefts. The department received four separate reports of trucks being stolen from their properties.

The focus for farmers is planting. Texas and Louisiana are underway, but fields in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri are being prepped. California is still waiting out the spring weather with another storm expected through the weekend. Texas has passed 30% planted. Prices for paddy have remained firm, even as the milling activity has quieted down a bit. Domestic business remains, but trouble in Haiti has the potential to snarl up the flow of exports in the coming weeks.

Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 10.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.14/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 35.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 7.0 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 2.0 cents in the last week and stands at $4.02 per gallon.

The Texas labor market again achieved new record-high levels for jobs, Texans employed, and the civilian labor force following over-themonth increases in February. Texas’ seasonally adjusted job count increased by 49,800 over the month of February to reach 14,103,700 jobs. This reflects job growth in 44 of the last 46 months and marks the largest total nonfarm monthly job gain since January 2023.

Less than a month remains until the highly anticipated total eclipse adorns Texas skies. On April 8, a total eclipse will shade 31 Texas state parks along the path of totality.

COLUMBUS – The March 21 regular meeting for the Greater Colorado Valley Wellness Council featured presentations on several topics from child abuse awareness to the improvement of Colorado County transportation.

WEIMAR – The Weimar City Council meeting on March 14 saw significant developments as they publicly introduced the new city manager Richard Whitten and accepted Fire Marshal Russ McAfee’s resignation.

COLUMBUS – Several spring and summer events have officially been confirmed as the city moved to approve road closures for three separate events.

COLUMBUS – Drivers on Kleihege Road will need to slow down to a new speed as the Colorado County Commissioners set a new speed limit on the road along with several other actions at their March 25 regular meeting.

One of the first suspects to fall under police custody in the circumstances surrounding the death of Columbus resident Keaton Hancock and subsequently the death of Eagle Lake resident Jonathon Segura was convicted and awaits his sentencing date.

Colorado County will hold two separate elections in May. Both elections are equally important for different reasons. It is also imperative that voters pay attention to voting locations and times because each election is different.
