WEIMAR – The City Council’s first regular meeting of the new year saw a decision being made on the position of Fire Marshal after the previous Marshal, Mc-Caul Ulrich, resigned due to a potential breach in nepotism code. The city accepted recommendations before holding a vote in open session and deciding on the position.

COLUMBUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETS FOR MIXER

COLUMBUS – Columbus Community Hospital welcomed the first newborn of 2024 when Theo Vavrusa was born Jan. 2 to Dana Benz and Trey Vavrusa of Hallettsville. Dr. Eslam Elhammady and the labor and delivery nurses at CCH delivered the 8.3 lbs. baby boy.

COLUMBUS – The first city council meeting of the new year saw the council decide on the Planning and Zoning Commission’s membership with the appointment of a new member and the reappointment of two others. Other topics like the sewer averaging process and a joint election contract with the county were also discussed at the meeting.

In honor of National Law Enforcement Day on Jan. 9, the Citizen would like to bring a highlight to the local law enforcement agencies in the county as recognition for their service in the community.

The county elections office has released the full list of positions up for election at the upcoming primaries. Several incumbents are up for reelection this cycle, and there are a few candidates that will be running unopposed. Below is a list of the positions up for election and the candidates vying for their respective positions. There are no democratic candidates for any local positions in Colorado County. A full voter’s guide with a description of each candidate will be available in the Citizen in the weeks preceding the election.

Senate Bill 1, went into effect Dec. 2, 2021, which includes legislation that impacts Ballot by Mail Operations in Colorado County.

ALLEYTON – The St. Roch Catholic Church will be the host of a blood drive on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 2-7 p.m.

COLUMBUS – As the county enters election season during 2024, the republican candidates for county and state elections prepare themselves to campaign for their respective desired positions.

Colorado County members of the Bluebonnet Master Gardener Association are pleased to announce the upcoming Colorado County Lunch-N-Learn Series in Winter/Spring 2024 focused on gardening and horticulture!

National Law Enforcement Day

The 40th anniversary for the Annual Equipping the Saints sponsored by the Bluebonnet Conference of ELCA Congregations will be celebrated in 2024. The all-day event is being hosted by St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 400 N. Esplanade, Cuero on Saturday, Feb. 3. This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Past, Understanding the Present and Preparing for the Future.”

The Turtle Wing Foundation’s annual Toast event is slated for Thursday, Jan. 25 at Sengelmann Hall’s second floor in Schulenburg. Doors open at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar during cocktail hour.

Grants of up to $50,000 available to first responders, civic groups, other nonprofits

COLUMBUS – The New Greater Smith Chapel Baptist Church at 833 Preston St. will be celebrating a major milestone on Sunday, Jan. 14 as they host their 125th church anniversary at 3 p.m. following their normal Sunday service.
