The Cardinal’s varsity baseball team just completed a historical year for Columbus after reaching the Regional Semifinals just a few games away from reaching the state tournament. While their matchup against Saint Gertrudis did not go in their favor after Columbus pushed the series to a clinching third game, the Cards can come away from the season knowing a few positive takeaways from the season at large. For one, the Cards reached the regional semifinal round for the first time in 17 years. Secondly, after finishing the season with 27 wins, the Cards had their winningest season in program history. With several key departures from seniors after this season, the Cards will be hoping to find ways to continue the momentum next season.

Myers secured ninth place at the state meet in a field of upperclassmen as he was the only thrower at the state meet for shotput that was not at least a junior.

Two shutouts for Ladycats to reach Regional Finals

The Weimar Ladycats softball team stayed firmly at their spot in third on the TGCA state rankings after shutting out a fellow top ten 2A team in the state. The #10 Milano Lady Eagles battled the Ladycats to a competitive first game to start the series before Weimar took full control in game two to finish the sweep victory with two straight shutout wins. Victory in the regional semifinals set up a rematch series between district rivals the #4 Shiner Lady Comanches in the regional finals. The two teams split their matchups during the district season with Shiner taking game one by a 13-4 margin and Weimar taking the second by a score of 11-4. Cards’ drop district rivals to double shutout in Regional Quarterfinals

HALLETTSVILLE – The Columbus Cardinal s’ baseball team understood the challenges of facing a district opponent in the playoffs and the hurdles they would have to clear to claim an advantage over a team they had played twice already. During the district season against the Industrial Cobras, the teams split their competitions as Industrial claimed the first matchup by a 7-4 margin and Columbus won the second by a score of 11-4. The offense was not nearly as potent in the postseason rematch against these teams as the familiarity led to some highly defensive and tight games. However, when the offense could not get going, the Cards relied on the quality pitching and defense they have benefitted from all season to help them claim a twogame shutout sweep over their district rivals. The Cardinals will continue their postseason run into the regional semifinals with a series against Saint Gertrudis Academy for a chance to move on to the regional finals.

VICTORIA – The Weimar Wildcat baseball team had the offensive performance they were hoping for when they drew the Skidmore- Tynan Bobcats for the Area Championship round of the postseason. The Wildcats saw the ball well and found ways to make plays as they scored 21 runs in two games as they swept their second-round opponents. It was not only their offense that led them to victory as they also held their opponents to just four runs in a dominating effort that clinched Weimar’s spot in the regional rounds of the tournament. With this series victory, the Wildcats will now be seeking redemption against the Shiner Comanches for round three. Shiner took the advantage in both district games against the Wildcats, so Weimar will have to find a way to break through starting on Thursday, May 18 at Rice High School.

WIMBERLY – The Columbus Cardinals baseball team kept their postseason alive after competing in a three-game series with the Lytle Pirates as the teams vied for the Area Championship and a spot in the regional tournament portion of the playoffs. Recent history for Columbus had not been kind to the Cards in the area round as Columbus had not moved on past that round for the past 17 years. Columbus finally got their breakthrough this year as they had a dominating effort against the Pirates. Pitching and defense set the tone for the Cards as they did not allow a single run in a two-game sweep to claim their first Area Championship in nearly two decades. Now the Cards move on to face a familiar foe as they take on the Industrial Cobras for Columbus’ third match this season against their district rivals. The two teams split their district season matchups with one win apiece.
