The San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, operated by the Texas Historical Commission, will host a fun day of history and learning activities on Saturday, Dec. 2. Staff and volunteer living historians will demonstrate the trades, crafts and jobs performed by residents of the historic town during its heyday between 1823 and 1836. The programs will be ideal for history lovers and families looking for engaging and hands-on activities to share with children.

EAGLE LAKE – Rev. Sunshine Reyes, Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Columbus was the guest speaker at Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club on Thursday, Nov. 16.

New Voter Registration Certificates will be mailed out to all currently registered voters by Dec. 6. These new cards are yellow in color and are effective from Jan. 1, 2024 until Dec. 31, 2025. They will replace any previous Voter Registration Cards/Certificates.

As we enter the 2023 holiday season, Texans need to remain vigilant against criminals who care less about giving and more about stealing. Shoppers looking for a good deal this holiday season need to be aware of aggressive and deceptive scams designed by criminals to steal money and personal information.

From October to December, people throughout the U.S. participate in what is commonly called the Season of Giving. According to the NIH National Library of Medicine, over one third (34%) of annual donations occur during the “giving season,” between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Turtle Wing, a nonprofit organization, continues to serve hundreds of families who have children with learning challenges, connecting them with the needed services to be successful, helping them afford those services, and creating new opportunities. Last year, over 300 individuals and their families received services funded by Turtle Wing, ranging from speech therapy to afterschool art class. Over 3,500 sessions of therapy, over 500 tutoring sessions, over 300 hours of social skills, over 700 sessions of afterschool programs, and hundreds more hours of Day Hab, Learning Labs, Case management and more were funded by Turtle Wing Foundation.

We just finished up the annual and traditional time of Thanksgiving with family, friends, helping, giving, listening, and encouraging. I hope we all found moments of joy and spent some parts of the day giving thanks, not just in our hearts, but to those we shared time with. People bring a richness to our lives that adds a special value we might overlook whether that is through a personal relationship, a casual one, work related, or something of an abstract. If you missed someone, it is never too late to give a simple thank you.

LA GRANGE – On Wednesday, Nov. 15, the Fayette Community Foundation held a ceremony for 11 recipients of the 2023 Community Impact Grant at Frisch Auf! Valley Country Club in La Grange.

The Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum is hosting two Christmas Open Houses in conjunction with the Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center on Saturday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.The public is invited to bring in the holidays polka style with music and entertainment both days.

BRENHAM – Weimar FFA was represented by seven teams competing at the Area XI FFA Leadership Development Events on Saturday, Nov. 18th at Blinn College After a successful day, three Weimar FFA teams qualified for the State Leadership Development Events by placing 1st or 2nd in their respective events. The Texas FFA State LDEs will be held on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2.

COLUMBUS – Over half of a decade of planning, preparation and construction led to the addition of several upgrades at the Columbus Community Hospital and the surrounding buildings that play part of their operation. On Nov. 20, CCH celebrated their new additions with a dedication that featured a tour, followed by speeches by hospital officials as well as a few state dignitaries.

EAGLE LAKE – This year, the Eagle Lake Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the selection of Bobbe Shapiro Nolan as the Parade Marshal for the Christmas Parade of Lights, taking place Dec. 9 in Eagle Lake.

SHERIDAN – Members of various police enforcement departments combined to serve two warrants involved with a narcotics investigation in Colorado County led by the Westside Narcot ics Task Force on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

COLUMBUS – The local Brookshire Brothers left many reasons for the seniors living at Oak Bluff apartments at 1513 Montezuma St. to be thankful after donating meals to every resident on Nov. 16.

The Colorado County 4-H program met on Nov. 13 with the intent to provide some charitable donations and community service as they celebrated the holiday season with the spirit of giving.

SAN FELIPE – The origins of Texas find its roots in the rural areas around Colorado and Austin Counties that trace back to the Old 300 Settlers commissioned by Stephen F. Austin. Austin’s base of operations during Texas’ colonization was established in San Felipe, a smaller community south of Sealy. On Nov. 11, the town of San Felipe celebrated its 200th birthday with a special presentation at the San Felipe De Austin Museum that included a recreation of life during colonial Texas.
