CORRECTION
In our Feb. 8 and Feb. 17 editions, the headline on the front page regarding the filing period for the May 2023 elections read that the deadline was Feb. 13. That was incorrect, however, the story itself did accurately reflect that the filing period ran until Friday, Feb. 17. The Citizen apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Former NFL player stands as living history for Rice sports
The high school sports programs of Colorado County have created some outstanding players throughout their history who have gone on to do impressive things beyond their days at the school. While many have gone to play college ball, an elite few have risen the ranks and taken their place amongst fellow professional athletes at the top of their craft. One of those professionals from the county is someone who had always been used to the spirit of competitiveness and hard work it takes to reach that level ever since they first started their sports journey. Rice Consolidated High School alum Kevin Dogins let his work do the speaking throughout his athletic career that culminated into a multi-year career in the NFL as one of the few players from the area to reach that peak.

HISTORY RECORDER MAKES HER OWN HISTORY AS TRAILBLAZING JOURNALIST
The main purposes of journalism as an institution can mainly be boiled down to two things. For one, it can function as a watchdog, alerting communities of local politics, crimes and changes so the population can assess and address the covered topic accordingly. Another function is as a historical record of the community being covered. However, while much of the industry is based on recording others’ history, there are often notable and historical events that happen in the journalism world as well. Even in Colorado County, history is being made nearly daily behind the scenes of some of the most recognizable publications in the area. Longtime Eagle Lake resident and former professional journalist for both the Eagle Lake Headlight and the Colorado County Citizen, Alesia Woolridge, showcased just how impactful the history behind the history recorded in print can be. Woolridge made history as the first black person to become the managing editor and publisher of both publications as well as the first black owner of the Headlight. As a black woman, every mark of history she reached was twofold, becoming not just the first black person in the top positions, but also the first woman to reach many of those heights as well.

SAS SAINTLY NEWS
“For dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. St. Anthony will have Mass and Distribution of Ashes at 8:15 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. This is typically a day of fasting and abstaining from meat. Lent is a solemn observance that covers the 40 days, or approximately six weeks, prior to Easter Sunday, in which we reflect on the sacrifice and love Jesus showed us by dying on the cross to save us from our sins. The church will also pray the Stations of the Cross every Friday during Lent immediately following the 5:30 p.m. Mass.
