The Weimar Ladycats are preparing themselves for a run into district competition as they complete the last matches of their non-district schedule. As they enter the most crucial part of the season to make the postseason, the Ladycats are hoping their performances during the non-district portion of the schedule have them primed for a run at the district championship. Their most recent matches likely have them feeling like they are closer to being ready after sweeping two-straight opponents to boost their record and earn some confidence with two big victories.

YORKTOWN – The Weimar Wildcats have gotten the season started with a bang as they have dominated their first couple of opponents as they continue their chase to the postseason. After displaying their offensive capabilities in week one, they had yet another big victory last week as they shut out their opponents with a strong display on defense. Their offense still produced at a high level as the Wildcats controlled the game on the way to a 37-0 victory over the Yorktown Wildcats.

COLUMBUS – The school year got off to a busy start for St. Anthony Catholic School’s Saints, including new opportunities for Junior High students during their elective period, educators said.

COLUMBUS – At St. Anthony’s football home opener pep rally, the Saints enjoyed a bit of fun as one of the students got to throw a pie in the face of a teacher because of a fundraiser campaign at the school.

CHS students Kase Weishuhn and Lydia Benjamin received recognition from the College Board after accepting the National Rural and Small-Town award for exceptional GPA and PSAT scores.

Students from kindergarten to eighth grade will have an opportunity to learn more about art and practice different crafts at the Live Oak Art Center in Columbus.

EAGLE LAKE – A painting by a local artist who rubbed shoulders with a Hollywood legend and worked in the aircraft industry will be included in a silent auction to raise funds for the Eula & David Wintermann Library.

Boys & Girls Club members Jacob Jones (left) and Mason Evans worked on straw-paper airplanes as part of last week’s activities to encourage creativity. Each member built their own model aircraft in the hope of seeing them fly, and Brian Novak, club coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Champion Valley, even pitched in to help.

The Eagle Lake Community Garden Guild has chosen the home of Dan and Inez Matura, 308 Burns Ave. in Eagle Lake, for the September Yard of the Month. The landscape yard is maintained by Inez Matura and is full of plants and flowers including drift roses and Peggy Martin roses, Mexican bush, purple sage and many other plants. A solar birdbath and fountain attract hummingbirds to the feeders.

Ryan Lyle Dohmann, 40, of Alvin, Texas, died Aug. 25, 2023, following a brief illness. He was born Nov. 24, 1982, in Houston to Edgar Lee and Janis Naumann Dohmann.

Verne Hollis John Jr., 71, left to be with Hashem on Aug. 28, 2023, at his home in Columbus, Texas.

Bruce A. Koehn, 60, of Weimar, Texas, lost his battle with cancer Aug. 30, 2023.

Barbara Hohensee, 83, of Fayetteville, Texas, died Aug. 28, 2023, in Tomball, Texas.

John Wesley Duncan, 67, known to friends and family as Wesley, died Aug. 30, 2023, in Alleyton, Texas. He was born July 29, 1956, in Eagle Lake, Texas. He was a man of exceptional character, whose adventurous spirit, faith-filled heart and courageous disposition inspired all who knew him.

Darrell David Rau Jr., 75, of Columbus, Texas, lost his battle with cancer Aug. 28, 2023. He never lost his indomitable spirit, fighting bravely to the very end.

Cynthia “Cindy” Pickett Jolly, 77, of College Station lost her battle with cancer Aug. 22, 2023. She was born Aug. 18, 1946, in College Station to Thomas B. Pickett Jr. and Helen Hood Pickett. Both preceded her in death.

The Columbus Junior High Lady Cardinals opened the season on Thursday, Aug. 24th at home against Hallettsville.

SCHULENBURG – The Cardinals’ cross-country team got their first gold medal of the season after a strong performance by the Lady Cards in their most recent meet. Their gold medal came as part of three Lady Cards who finished in the top 15 places of the competition. The boys also contributed with some strong placements as Columbus secured six top-50 placements between both teams.

The Lady Cards are in the midst of a winning streak after taking a pair of match wins during last week’s competition. As Columbus enters the district portion of the schedule, the Lady Cards are hoping the experience of playing larger schools will help them take another district championship. Columbus has maintained their spot as one of the top teams in the state with the eighth-place ranking in the TGCA poll and a fourth-place ranking in the AP poll. They will try to keep that level of play throughout the rest of the season to give themselves a chance to take the top spot in the district.
