JOE, (JOSEPH), HENNEKE

Joe, (Joseph), Henneke of Frelsburg took his final breath on this earth with his wife and family on Aug 18, 2023. He was born on Nov 18, 1938, to Leo and Josephine (Kuhn) Henneke in Sealy, Texas. Joe married his high school sweetheart Jocelyn Motl on July 27, 1958, and they recently celebrated 65 years together. They had three loving daughters. Joe was a member of the Frelsburg Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Roch Catholic Church in Mentz. He served nine years in the National Guard. He worked for the Texas Highway Department for 35 years and retired in 1993. After retirement he went to work on his own and did custom hay baling.Hunting was the love of his life. He flew to Alaska and Canada for nine days and got a moose and in New Mexico he got an elk. Joe also enjoyed hunting in the Hill Country in South Texas and around his home. Joe grew up on the family farm and ranch. He spent many hours with the horse and mules mowing hay. He then got a cab tractor and a best friend, “Smokey the dog”. He went with him everywhere he went. When he got older, he rode in cab tractor with him.

Juanita Garling Luedecke age 86, passed away in Columbus, Texas on Aug 17, 2023. She was born to Louise Knippel on Jan 24, 1937. Juanita married her husband of 62 years, Werner Luedecke, on May 19, 1957.

DONNA CULTON

Donna Frances Culton was born on Sep 10, 1954, to Edgar Joe and Adeline Braden Heintschel in Weimar, TX. She passed away peacefully at her home in Mentz on Aug 14, 2023, at the age of 68. Her family resided in Columbus which Donna attended and graduated from Columbus High School. She then attended the University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a degree in elementary education. She was offered a position as the third-grade teacher at St. Anthony School in 1978. Mrs. Culton loved teaching at St. Anthony’s! However, she moved to the Hill Country 4 years later. She taught at Blanco ISD for several years until she was once again called back to Columbus. She taught third grade for a year at Columbus Elementary School. The Hill Country called her back again, where she married her husband David and taught again in Blanco ISD until 1995 when her greatest accomplishment occurred, the birth of her son, Garrett Braden Culton.

Lady Cards take winning record from higher division tourney
Lady Cards take winning record from higher division tourney

The Columbus varsity volleyball team got to play against some difficult competition last week as they took on the Plugerville tournament. As one of just three 3A teams in the tourney, the Lady Cards played several 5A and 6A teams as they competed against some of the better teams from bigger divisions. Despite taking on some bigger schools, the Lady Cards came away with a positive record by winning five of their nine matches.

The Columbus Cardinals got their final tuneup of the season in a scrimmage against the neighboring Sealy Tigers. Each of the starters and the backups got a chance to get some reps in the joint practice for both teams. The Cards hope their preparation has them ready for their season opener against Giddings on Friday, Aug. 25.

Fayette Community Foundation Impact grant cycle opens Sept.1

Since 2015, the Fayette Community Foundation (FCF) has awarded $43,500 to nonprofit programs enhancing local arts, culture, social welfare, health, conservation, and education. FCF’s 2023 Community Impact Grant cycle opens September 1st and closes September 30th, accessible through its new online portal. Beginning this year, funding priorities for the Community Impact Grant will focus on mental health and workforce development and education. Eligible nonprofits are able to apply for funding through FCF’s two signature programs: The Red Door Fund for Mental Health and The Green Door Fund for Workforce Development and Education.

Library summer reading ends

The Eula and David Wintermann Library in Eagle Lake had another very successful Summer Reading Program. The theme for the program was,“All Together Now”. Programs were held each Wednesday morning at 10:30am from June 7 to July 19. There were 56 students enrolled, books and certificates were given to 29 of those students who achieved the goals set for the program. Funding for the summer program was provided by a Dollar General Grant.

Rice High School All-Sports Booster Club speaker

On Thursday, Aug 17, 2023, Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club member Sam Kana introduced the program guest speaker Jamy Dingler, Volunteer Coordinator for Rice High School All-Sports Booster Club. Jamy is a 1993 graduate of Rice High School, where her son now attends. Jamy highlighted two goals of the Booster Club: First: To raise enough funding to award a scholarship to students participating in at least 3 sports each year during the four years of High School plus completing the service work required. The club gives an average of $8,000 per year in scholarships. Second: To give back to the Athletic programs at Rice tangible things such as equipment that will benefit more than one sport.
