Several top 10 finishes highlight Rice CXC performance

WALLIS – The Raiders’ cross-country team has continued their strong start to the season with another quality outing in their most recent competition. The boys’ team finished in second place overall after several runners finished in the top 10. As the reigning district champs look to defend their title, they will also be looking to continue their progress throughout the season.

Lady Raiders enter home tourney on win streak before losing streak

The Rice Lady Raiders volleyball team started last week with the first of three wins in a row that matched their longest win streak of the season as they have already surpassed last season’s win total. After winning a few of their opening matches in the home-hosted Rice varsity tournament, the Lady Raiders struggled a bit in the rest of the tourney with a 1-6 record the rest of the way.

EL CAMPO – The varsity runners of the Weimar cross-country team had a strong outing in their most recent meet as they took on a field of 3A-5A teams. Despite being the only 2A team represented, the girls’ varsity team had one of the best days of all the teams as they finished in second place overall after several top performances.

They are hoping their first game of the season is indicative of their potential this year after dominating on the way to a 53-6 victory over the John Paul II Guardians.

The Weimar Ladycats’ varsity volleyball team had a strong run through the Rice-hosted tournament last week as they lost just two matches throughout the competition. One of which was in the gold bracket championship match against the team that currently sits at the no. 2 spot in the TGCA rankings. Weimar’s defeat to Iola in that match clinched second place overall at the tournament for the Ladycats.

The lull is over!

Ladies’ Night Out, Christmas on the Colorado Lighted Parade, Santa Claus Museum open every Friday now from 12 noon to 6 p.m., Lunch & Learns, Columbus High School Career Fair, becoming a Film Friendly Texas town, and even a Casino Night are some of the projects that the Columbus Chamber of Commerce is working on. Combined with school being back in session and sports ramping up, it is the beginning of busy times in Columbus and Colorado County.

EL CAMPO – The Columbus cross- country team continues to pick up the pace as they progress through their early- season competitions. The girls’ team has already begun to stand out as they consistently put up top performances in their appearances. Their most recent meet was another example of that as every Lady Card that competed placed in the top 20 with two runners finishing in the top five.

Battle of the Brazos tournament ends with Lady Cards in fifth

The no. 8 ranked Lady Cards’ volleyball team has been facing off against some tough competition as they have frequently played higher division teams throughout their tournament schedule. Their most recent tournament even included some 6A teams as the Lady Cards battled to take fifth place in the LCISD-hosted competition. Columbus claimed fifth place out of 40 teams after their performance with Ally Tribe being named to the All-Tournament team.

GIDDINGS – The Columbus Cardinals’ varsity football team knows that the path to a state title appearance starts with the important week-to-week steps that start from the first day of training camp. The Cards made a big step with the start of the regular season as they defeated the Giddings Buffaloes in a dominating, 47-12 victory that they hope sets the standard for their performances for the rest of the season.
