COLUMBUS – The City Council heard concerns for safety regarding a request for an extra street closure than usual for the Magnolia Days Festival in May. Despite sharing those concerns with the presenters, the Council moved to deny the request along with other actions at the March 11 regular meeting.

The following are reported road closures in Colorado County: Frontage Road, Eastboound from Willow Creek to Crooked Road has full closure from March 6 and May 14.

The recent Joint Primary Elections in Colorado County saw over 5,000 residents hit the polls at their respective polling locations. The final voting numbers were released along with the unofficial results from the Elections Department.

In the Bill of Rights, there are certain freedoms guaranteed to U.S. citizens to protect from potential oppressive opposition by the government to stop it. This week from March 10 to March 16, the nation is celebrating the First Amendment and the merits of an open and transparent government. Specifically, the Freedom of Information Act of 1967 has gone a long way into keeping government transparent at every level from local school boards to the U.S. Congress.

COLUMBUS – The County Office of Emergency Management is working through the process of creating and reviewing the county’s official Hazard Mitigation Plan to help the county prepare for potential risks and apply for natural disaster grants or similar funds. On March 7, the Langford Community Management Service held a public meeting where residents could come and express concerns and point out hot spot areas for hazards.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Police Department potentially took a stand against child trafficking in Colorado County as they successfully arrested a man allegedly connected with the disappearance of a 12-year-old girl in Missouri City the week prior.

There will be a new sheriff in town after the results of the 2024 primary elections on Tuesday, March 5 as Justin Lindemann took the voting majority during the election. The Colorado County Elections Office released the unofficial results of the joint primaries at around 10 p.m. that night.

Phoebe Lake, owner of a specialty plant nursery called New Leaf Nursery in Brenham, will present the program “Some Like It Hot” to members of Columbus Garden Club on Wednesday March 13. The nursery specializes in fine herbs, perennials and native plants that are sold in farmer’s markets. Janet Johnson, President of the garden club, says “the program will be about heat-loving plants for Central Texas and will be a power point presentation that will include handouts and allow time for attendees to ask questions.”

COLUMBUS – The Office of Emergency management will begin seeking feedback during the public opinion phase of the Hazard Mitigation Plan construction period. After seeking called in and written responses from county residents, the OEM will host a public meeting for residents to learn more about the current plan and to provide feedback.
