Returning students and staff welcomed new students and staff in hopes of kicking off a new year of learning, faith and friendship.

The Weimar High School FFA branch has officially announced this year’s group of officers that will be leading the organization for the 2023-2024 school year. Each of the students recognized as officers exemplified the values of FFA and showed desire in furthering the program with their own individual success as well as looking to enhance their peers as well.

Library summer reading ends

The Eula and David Wintermann Library in Eagle Lake had another very successful Summer Reading Program. The theme for the program was,“All Together Now”. Programs were held each Wednesday morning at 10:30am from June 7 to July 19. There were 56 students enrolled, books and certificates were given to 29 of those students who achieved the goals set for the program. Funding for the summer program was provided by a Dollar General Grant.

Rice High School All-Sports Booster Club speaker

On Thursday, Aug 17, 2023, Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club member Sam Kana introduced the program guest speaker Jamy Dingler, Volunteer Coordinator for Rice High School All-Sports Booster Club. Jamy is a 1993 graduate of Rice High School, where her son now attends. Jamy highlighted two goals of the Booster Club: First: To raise enough funding to award a scholarship to students participating in at least 3 sports each year during the four years of High School plus completing the service work required. The club gives an average of $8,000 per year in scholarships. Second: To give back to the Athletic programs at Rice tangible things such as equipment that will benefit more than one sport.

WHS sports booster meet-and-greet features champion softball team

The athletes of Weimar High School varsity sports will have a chance to connect more directly with their community during the Booster club’s membership drive to recruit more boosters to help with donations and volunteering to help the various sports programs at Weimar. On Monday, Aug. 7 in the WHS cafeteria, Weimar residents and sports fans will be able to meet the athletes that will be competing during the upcoming school year as well as partake in a hamburger supper. The state champion Ladycat softball team will also be in attendance for photos and autographs following dinner. For fans of Weimar varsity sports, this is their opportunity to meet and become familiar with the next group of Wildcat athletes before their respective seasons begin in the fall.

Rice FFA student receives highest honor
Rice FFA student receives highest honor

The Rice FFA chapter had some quality representation at the Texas FFA State Convention as one of their students received one of the highest honors an FFA student can receive. Adalyn Rodgers, an upcoming senior at Rice Consolidated High School, received the Texas Lone Star FFA degree to mark her commitment to the chapter and the duties and values that surround being an FFA student. Rodgers and the rest of the Rice chapter will look to improve further and have more students receive the honor for future conventions.

DALLAS – The Weimar FFA program had a strong showing at the Texas FFA State Convention with several of their students earning individual awards and recognition. The sum of their parts combined to earn the chapter the 3-Star rating National Chapter Award at the convention after finishing as the highest ranking 3-Star Chapter in Texas for the third straight year.

Weimar Vets fall to Clippers 6-3

The Weimar Vets hosted the Shiner Clippers at Strickland Field on Sunday, July 23. The Clippers scored a run in each of the first three innings while the Vets matched that to tie the game at 3-3 after five innings. The Clippers broke the tie with three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead, which proved to be the final score.

On Tuesday, July 11, Deputy Andrew Lopez from the Colorado County Sherrif’s Office joined the Weimar Lions Club at their luncheon meeting. The Lions said Deputy Lopez solely focuses on mental health and has extensive training in crisis management, de- escalation techniques and hostage negotiations. Roughly 11% of calls to the Sherrif’s Office are related to mental health issues, the Lions said.
