Girls’ THCSA Super Elite Teams pick county players
Two of Colorado County’ s varsity girls’ basketball teams were represented Texas High School Coaches Association inaugural Super Elite Team, a yearly all-star team selected from players of every division of play. Weimar’s Paige Pavlu made the cut for one of the top nine players in the 2A division. Columbus had a representative in the next largest division with Karlee Mathis being named to the Super Elite Team. Mathis saw a few of her fellow Elite Teammates in this most recent postseason, facing off against 3A MVP Jalynn Bristow in the State Semifinal game. 04/12/2023 12:00 AM

Lady Raiders find scoring after rain delay
The Lady Raiders softball team showed some improvement in Monday night’s defeat to the Edna Cowgirls. Originally moved from its scheduled date on April 6 due to a rain cancellation, Rice had a much more complete effort than in their game against the Yoakum Bulldoggettes earlier in the week on April 4. Despite their improvement, the Lady Raiders were not able to keep up with Edna as they dropped the Monday make-up game after falling to Yoakum by a large margin. 04/12/2023 12:00 AM

Texas leads nation with fastest economic expansion
AUSTIN – On March 31, Governor Greg Abbott released a statement lauding the strength of the Texas economy as new data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows Texas leading the nation with the fastest economic expansion in the fourth quarter of 2022. As measured by the state’s gross domestic product, the value of all goods and services produced, the Texas economy expanded at an annual rate of 7%. AUSTIN, Texas – Research at The University of Texas at Austin’s PsyBrain Lab contributed to the recent Food and Drug Administration approval of the first commercially available laboratory test for traumatic brain injury in the U.S. The technology, called Alinity i, tests for elevated levels of two biomarkers in blood that are tightly correlated with brain injury and can diagnose patients in as little as 18 minutes. 04/12/2023 12:00 AM

Reverend Martin Nicholas Williams was the only child born to Helen Viser Williams and Raymond Williams. He entered this world on Feb. 20, 1932, in Browns Chapel, Texas. After surviving conditions doctors found miraculous for a man of his advanced years, he quietly slipped away on his own terms Monday, April 3, 2023. He attended J.A. Greene School in Schulenberg, Texas, then graduated with a BS and MS in Agricultural Education and a certification in guidance and counseling from Prairie View A&M University. He faithfully served at St. Paul United Methodist Church (UMC) in various capacities, including becoming a lay leader, a lay speaker, and eventually the interim pastor. 04/12/2023 12:00 AM

John Lee Korenek, beloved husband and father, passed away Friday, April 7, 2023 as a result of complications from an 8-year battle with Wegener’s kidney disease and mantle cell lymphoma.
