Columbus marathoner shows ‘grit’ through pain, goes the distance in Ultra run

Colorado County has been home to many extraordinary citizens who have done and achieved many unprecedented feats. The accomplishments from current-day residents or from those who called these towns home in their youth have left an impressive history amongst the small towns of Texas. In terms of athletic feats, there may be few in the county’s history that can boast the caliber of accomplishment that one Columbus woman secured at the turn of the new year. Katy Bell is a long-time marathon runner who had already done incredible things in the sport before signing herself up for the SnowDrop Ultra, a beast unlike anything she had done prior. The registered nurse, who celebrates her 50th birthday in the coming months, took on the 100-mile race that allows contestants up to 55 hours to complete. Through muddy terrain and a pain that developed early on, Kathy Bell battled on and accomplished what many would fail by finishing the race with plenty of time to spare.

Cards wash cars in memory of baseball superfan, guardian angel

The Cards’ varsity baseball team will officially have a new yearly tradition after they have their second annual car wash fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 29 at the Country Fresh Cleaners at 10 am. Last year marked their first iteration of the event which helped them afford important equipment and team gear. However, there is a deeper meaning behind the Cards’ car wash as they pay their respects to a dearly departed, longtime fan of the team. In remembrance of Kristie Geisler, the team plans to continue their new tradition with the same spirit of joy and love for the team that Geisler displayed in life.

City of Columbus receives Governor’s Proclamation

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Chamber of Commerce received a proclamation from Governor Greg Abbott in recognition of Columbus’ upcoming Bicentennial Celebration, which marks 200 years of the city’s existence. The proclamation reads in part: “A town as old as Texas herself, Columbus has had a frontrow seat to an entire history. Two hundred years ago, settlers took up the ‘Gone to Texas’ banner and build a community that would stand the test of time … From General Houston’s base camp in the Revolution to the legendary cattle drives of a bygone saga, the town has witness many iconic moments and has epitomized both the noble pioneering spirit and the fierce independence that have come to define our people…The same values and valor that enabled Columbus to thrive in the age of westward expansion have indeed survived well into the new millennium … As you reflect upon your proud past and look toward and even brighter tomorrow, I hope that you will rededicate yourselves to the values and traditions that built your city ...”
