JACKIE HUGHES

JACKIE HUGHES

Jackie Colleen Hughes, 98, of Columbus, Texas, died June 22, 2023, in Columbus.

She was born Aug. 14, 1924, to Arlow Virgil Walters and Mabel Grace (Penhorwood) Walters in Neodesha, Kansas. On July 19, 1941, she married Charles Arthur Hughes.

She worked as a secretary for many years for the Pasadena Independent School District and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Jackie was an amazing person. She was such an inspiration to many with her strength, faith, passion and a heart that was so full of love.

The following Psalm always reminded her granddaughter, Brandi Taylor, of her in so many ways: 1 Corinthians 13:48a – “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.”

She had many loves in her life – family, reading, being active in her church and the Madison Jobe Senior Center; animals, bingo, bridge, dominoes and many types of dancing such as ballroom, square dancing and the Silver Star Tap Dancing group she co-created with Julie Digulio.

Survivors include her daughter, Leslie Stone (significant other Gary Ashford); son Charles Gregory Hughes (Niel Hurst); grandchild Brandi Taylor; great-grandchildren Sean Aaron Taylor, Alicia Gonzales (Anthony), and Logan Kirschner; and great-great-grandchildren Dominic Cardenas and Romeo Cardenas.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother Marshall Walters; and grandchild Sean Michael Taylor.

A celebration of life will is 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m..

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6055 S. Loop East, Houston, TX 77087 or a charity of choice.

Jackie will forever be in our hearts. We love you.
