INEZ SPENCER TOWNSEND

INEZ SPENCER TOWNSEND

INEZ SPENCER TOWNSEND

We regretfully announce the passing of Inez Spencer Townsend (nee Spaeth), 100, of Williamsburg, Virginia, on March 5, 2023. Our mother, Inez, was one of the strongest and kindest persons and we were blessed to have her as our mother.

Inez was born on March 28, 1922 and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. During WWII, she enlisted in the U.S. Army as a WAC, stationed in Miami, Florida. She then attended Oklahoma State University graduating in 1950, with a degree in education. While there she met the love of her life, John Franklin Townsend. They were married in 1950.

Inez and Frank eventually settled in Texas where for eleven years she taught P.E. and science to grades 6-12 at Canton Schools in Canton, Texas, and even drove a school bus for nine of those years. In her retirement years she volunteered as a “Pink Lady” volunteer at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Texas.

Inez and Frank loved spending time with her numerous brothers and sisters and their spouses; they always had a great time together. Inez loved traveling, playing any type of sports with tennis and golf being her favorites, and building (and tearing down) just about anything, including houses.

Inez was predeceased by her husband, Frank, parents Ervin F. Spaeth and Violet Marie Spaeth, and six brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by a son Kim (Glinda) Townsend of Athens, Texas, daughter, Rhonda (David) Machlan of Williamsburg, Virginia, grandchildren, Casey (Amber) Townsend, Kolby Townsend and Lana (Jackson) Hendrich, Cooper (Ashley) Machlan, Frank Machlan and Carly Machlan, and two great-grandchildren, Michaela and Cason Townsend, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A morning Rosary service will be held on Monday, March 20, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus, Texas. Interment will be that afternoon at 2:15 p.m. at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
