VIRGINIA MARY HERZIK

VIRGINIA MARY HERZIK

Virginia Mary Herzik, 95, of Columbus passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 23, in Columbus. She was born on October 10, 1929, to William and Amelia (Starustka) Vornsand in Moravia.

She attended and graduated from Schulenburg High School, where she was a devoted supporter of the Shorthorns throughout her life. Virginia often mentioned that her graduation day was one of the happiest days of her life. Following her graduation, Virginia worked for Dr. Peters in Schulenburg, marking the beginning of her nursing career. She later joined Columbus Eye Associates, where she dedicated over 35 years to her profession.

On February 28, 1949, Virginia married Eugene “Gene” Herzik. The couple was blessed with four chi ldren: Joseph “Joe” Herzik and wife Tommie, Joan Poenitzsch and husband Robert “Bob”, Vivian Fortenberry and husband Dale, and youngest daughter Marlene Bradford.

Always keeping herself occupied, Virginia enjoyed ironing, sewing, and cleaning houses for people in the community, all while taking care of her beloved family. Virginia and Gene were avid bowlers and active members of the Jolly Texans Band. Known as the best couple on the dance floor, their love for each other was evident in every step they took. They traveled to numerous destinations, but Virginia’s favorite place to spend time was at her camp in Praha, fondly known as the Bohemian Country Club. While her family was always the primary focus of her life, Virginia also cherished her three canine companions, Snooky, Hot Rod, and Oscar Meyer.

She is survived by her four children, as well as a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We would like to extend special thanks to the Tru-Care Living Center family, along with all the sitters and caretakers, particularly Stephanie Shorter, for their unwavering support in helping Virginia.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus with Deacon John Glueck officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating her life at Columbus Hall, located at 3845 I-10 in Columbus.
