BARBARA ANN MCMATH
BARBARA ANN MCMATH
Barbara was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1946 to Ivan and Ravia Moore. She grew up in Albuquerque and attended the Albuquerque Public Schools and Eastern New Mexico University. She worked in the family business, Moore’s Generator Exchange, and Metropolitan Insurance Company. As opportunities in the insurance field became available, she took jobs at State Farm, Farmer’s Group, Pioneer American and a host of jobs in the boating, oi l, hardware, home construction and architectural fields. In her later years, she volunteered to help many, including children with Down Syndrome.
During a brief Labor Day vacation in 1969, she re-met former Highland High School classmate Clint at his aunt and uncle’s home. Clint was on a 3-day furlough from his army post in Fort Ord, California. They hit it off and corresponded until he returned to Albuquerque for Christmas and a trip to his parents’ home near Ft. Worth. Since time was short, they made the trip to Cleburne, Texas with aunt and uncle in tow, got everyone’s approval and were married at First Baptist Church in Cleburne on Dec. 23, 1969. They went back to Albuquerque to face Barbara’s parents the next week.
Clint returned to the Army and Barbara followed him about a month later. Barbara got a job with the famous Pebble Beach architect, Will Shaw, met Clint Eastwood and his family, and Ansel Adam photographic fame in Monterey. She worked on Cannery Row. Life was good.
About a year later, Clint left the army to return to his pre-army job at Schlumberger. From there, they began almost yearly relocations from the mountain west oil boom towns, to Denver, Dallas, Wichita, the Silicon Valley and back to Houston. Son, John, was born in Powell, Wyoming in 1974. Clint was away from home or overseas regularly, so it was Barbara and John often times alone during his teen years. Barbara had to anticipate somewhat yearly moves, never getting too unpacked or ahead of herself with John.
During this time period, John was heavily involved in sports including tennis, football and track and ultimately began competitive waterskiing. He was number 1 in the State of Louisiana boys 12 and under tennis and holds school track records that still stand in California for the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs. In waterskiing, he became 2-time National Champion and 3 time collegiate All American at the University of Louisiana/Lafayette and was a 4-time national champion individually. Barbara spent countless hours driving a ski boat so he could master the ski l ls necessary to be competitive. They traveled to weekend ski tournaments several months a year and volunteered to do scorekeeping and entry administration. She tended to John’s scholastic needs and managed our home. John attributes his success as an athlete and coach to the example set by his mother. Again, Barbara would take shortterm jobs to fill in for someone which always turned into more time than she anticipated.
Barbara enjoyed playing both piano and organ, quilting, canning, gardening, fishing, auto racing and a number of hand crafts. She was an avid fan of Texas high school football, the Indianapolis 500, NASCAR and dirt track racing.
She worked for John Bowers State Farm for many years helping clients, including celebrities and sports figures, solve their insurance needs. People liked Barbara and she enjoyed being able to service their insurance needs quickly and correctly.
After retiring in the 1990s, she and Clint began traveling, camping and touring in their motorhome. They spent time at Angel Lake, Texas, Gunnison, Colorado and Edinburg, Texas, enjoying friends and the outdoors. They worked on Angel Lake and Wood Lake Estates developments. Barbara used her extensive home building skills to keep projects on time and on budget.
A difficult birth in her 20s resulted in Barbara having many back problems and surgeries the rest of her life. She fell in 2007 and was paralyzed almost 100%. She was always in pain. Parkinson’s struck in 2023. She maintained her smile and bright spirit right until the end. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church since her college days.
She is survived by her husband, Cl int of 54 years, son, John, daughter- in-law, Tracy, grandson, Jackson, brother, Jerold, sister-in-law, Julie and sister-in-law, MariAnn Moore.
