MAINER

MAINER

Nicholas Jackson Mainer, Jr., or “Nicky” as the family called him, was born on Jan. 24, 1947, and was adopted by his wonderful parents Nicholas J. Mainer, Sr. and Margaret Berry Mainer. The Mainer family resided on a ranch in Columbus, Texas. In addition to raising cattle on their ranch, Nicky’s father owned a Western Auto Store on the square in Columbus. His father was a graduate of Texas A&M, a deacon at First Baptist Church, past President & Director Emeritus of San Bernard Electric Cooperative, and served on the Columbus School Board for 17 years.

Nicky attended special education classes in the Columbus school system, but later lived at Marbridge Ranch for Developmentally Challenged men in Manchaca, Texas near Austin. His last few years were spent in the Austin area in various nursing homes.

Nick and Margaret adored their son and took him on many trips across the United States. They owned Hillcliff Motel on the Big Thompson River in Estes Park, Colorado, and they spent summers running the motel. Nick loved Estes Park, and as long as he lived, he loved to get photo books of Colorado & Estes Park. He also loved Superman & the Beatles, and always loved to get T-shirts with those hero’s pictures.

After Nick’s parents passed away, his cousin, Robert Clayton, demonstrated unwavering devotion by making monthly trips from San Antonio to Austin. During these visits, he ensured Nick enjoyed cherished outings, such as lunches together. After Mr. Clayton passed away his daughter, Lynn Clark, took over that role. Later, Jennie Pochat stepped in as caregiver for Nicky, and took him out to lunch, for drives to see construction sites, and for his favorite outing to the Austin Rodeo once a year. The Lord called Nick home on Saturday, May 11 in Round Rock, TX at the age of 77. He is survived by Bob and Lynn Clark, (cousin), his wonderful caregiver Jennie Pochat, and various distant relatives.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Odd Follows Rest Cemetery in Columbus, Texas.
