MARY CATHERINE BERGER

Mary Catherine Berger, aged 88, passed away on March 3 in Columbus, Texas. She was a beloved mother, wife, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Catherine was born on June 2, 1935 in Provident City, Texas and grew up in Garwood, Texas where she lived for over 75 years. She graduated from Garwood High School and is a graduate of Draughn’s Business School. On June 21, 1958, she married Lawrence Berger in Garwood, Texas.

But more than anything, Catherine was a devoted mother. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, playing cards and games with them and taking them on trips.

In her free time, Catherine enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, her Longhorn cattle and traveling. She was an active member in her community and belonged to the Women’s Society of Christian Service, Garwood Association of Restoration, and Nada/ Garwood Gadabouts. Catherine also played the piano and organ for the Lehrer Memorial United Methodist Church and was church board secretary.

Catherine is survived by her loving husband, Lawrence, her children, Elizabeth Grissom and husband, Cullen, Jeffrey Berger and wife Karen, and her grandchildren, Casey Matzke, David Grissom and wife, Lindsay, Jacob Berger and wife, Karli, Britni Milstead and husband, Kevin, Cortni Latham, and husband, Freddy, and Matthew Moody. She also has four great-grandchildren, Mattie Polasek, Wyatt Hanley, Brayden Milstead, and Luke Latham as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Hazel Green; sister, Brunette Woodruff; brothers, Bozo Green and Tom Ford.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home, Columbus, Texas. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 6 at 10 a.m. at Lehrer Memorial United Methodist Church, Garwood, Texas, officiated by Pastor Cathy McCorkle. Burial will take place in Lehrer Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Jacob Berger, David Grissom, Mitchel Smith, Billy Earl Rees, Kenneth Danklefs, and Billy Macek. Honorary pallbearers are Gary Kocurek, Keith Webb and Mark Wied.
