AUGUST JONES
On Sept. 23, 1949, he married the love of his life, Dolores Ann DeJardo, of Columbus. August worked as an installer/ repairman for Southwestern Bell for many years. He served in the Marines during the Korean War conflict. He is a decorated military veteran who proudly served his country. After discharge from the Marines, he entered the Army in the Armored Tank Battalion under General Patton. He received the rank of First Lieutenant in 1957. He then served in the Army National Guard Tank Battalion. He entered the Army Reserves until 1965 as a Captain.
August was one of the founders of the Bernardo VFD and one of the last surviving members of that group. He attained the rank of 4th Degree Knight, Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator and District Deputy in the Knights of Columbus. He was a lifelong member of St. Roch Catholic Church in Mentz.
August enjoyed hunting, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
August is survived by his daughters Bonnie Mascheck and husband Daniel and Sandy Jones Wied; sons August “Sonny” Jones, Jr. and John Raymond Jones and wife Dianne; sister Marion Frank and husband Ronnie; grandchildren Daniel Mascheck, Jr. and wife Jennifer, Christina Martinez and husband David, Brandy Janak and husband Scott, Courtney Wied, Christian Trent Wied, John Anthony Jones and wife Danielle, Joshua Allen Jones and fiancĂ© Jessica Harris, Denise Pawlik and husband Jason, Christopher Jones and wife Kellie, and Alison Zwahr and husband Nathan; great-grandchildren Kent and Samantha Mascheck, Christian and David Martinez, Brandon, Rebecca and Michael Janak, Abel and August Rose “Rosie” Wied, Henry James and John Robert Jones, Cameron Marshall, James Raymond Jones, Lillian Snow Jones, Madison Shorter and Husband Jameal, Tyler Pawlik, Dalton Estlinbaum, Jacob and Jackson Jones, Alexa Phallan and husband Shawn, Alyssa Zwahr and fiancĂ© Joseph Cooke.
He was preceded in death by parents August and Augusta “Gussie” Jones; wife Dolores Jones; daughter-in-law Carolyn Jones; brothers Gene Jones and wife Dorothy, Milton Jones and wife Mary; sister Marjorie Strieder and husband John; granddaughter Christine Michelle Jones.
Visitation was held on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, Texas. A parish prayer service and rosary followed at 7 p.m. with Deacon Chuck Glynn officiating.
Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at 10 a.m. at St. Roch Catholic Church in Mentz, Texas. Fr. James Dvorak officiated. Visitation at church was from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The burial took place in St. Roch Catholic Cemetery in Mentz, Texas.
Pallbearers were Trent Wied, Nathan Zwahr, Jacob Jones, Joshua Jones, John Anthony Jones, Tyler Pawlik, Chris Pilsner, Jason Klausmeyer, David Pilsner, and Oliver Weishuhn. Honorary pallbearers were the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department members.
