Heaven has a new farmer. Wayne Corman passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side on July 5, 2023. He was born on Nov. 10, 1943, and raised in Lissie, Texas, where as a youngster he roamed the area with friends on horseback. After starting school a year early, in East Bernard, he later became an Eagle Lake Eagle, the 1961 Class President and an All District pulling guard and linebacker on the football team.

William Robert “Bob” Pickens III died on July 3, 2023, in Katy, Texas. He was born in Orange, Texas on Sept. 11, 1932, to Ruth Peveto Pickens and William Robert Pickens, Jr. He grew up in Beaumont, Texas where his small family home backed up to a natural forest. With no sibling playmates, Bob entertained himself by exploring the forest, watching the birds, snakes and other wildlife and developed an enduring interest in the natural world.

Ethel Hurr Ray, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on June 12, 2023. Ethel was born on Nov. 23, 1928, in Columbus, Texas to Johnnie Lee and Henry Hurr. After losing her father at a very young age, Ethel spent her childhood with her mother in Glidden, Texas surrounded by her beloved Aunt and Uncle, Ethel and Harvey Hope, as well as her cousin Betty Jo Hope Wittmer, who was like a sister to her.

Larry Lee Austin was born on Feb. 17, 1937, in Eagle Lake, Texas to Samuel and Lillie Estelle (Barker) Austin. He died on June 12, 2023, in Katy, Texas after a short illness. He was 86 years young.

Emil Joseph Socha, Jr. (E.J.) went to be with God on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the age of 83. He was born Dec. 18, 1939, in Taiton, Texas to Emil, Sr and Leona (Bubela) Socha. He grew up in Taiton and El Campo area and graduated from El Campo High School in 1958. He attended Wharton Junior College and then enlisted in the US Air Force where he served from 1960-1964. He married the love of his life, Margie Kulhanek, on Oct. 25, 1964, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Frelsburg, Texas where he remained an active member until his death.

Larry S. Miller of Columbus, Texas passed on Feb. 27, 2023, at his home. Born in 1941, he grew up in Richmond, Indiana, graduating from Richmond Sr. High School in 1959. He worked as a draftsman for Richmond Homes, then enlisted in the Army in 1963, serving until 1968.

WALTER HENRY EVANS
Walter Henry Evans died May 29, 2023, surrounded by the family he loved. He was born on May 20, 1932, in Columbus, Texas to Lillie Burger Evans and Leve Evans, the second child of three. Growing up, Walter was best known as “Fuse-e” Evans earned for his quick running ability on the 1948 and 1949 Columbus Cardinal High School football team and as a high and low hurdler in the 1949 Texas State Track and Field Competition. Under new head coach Bill Hartley, the ’49 Cardinals went into the final week of football season with a chance to win the south half of the district title, with Fuse-e Evans scoring the first 17-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. This nickname stuck and was used by friends and family for his entire life. His love of athletics and exercising, especially in retirement, included his daily walk around the Columbus athletic track, which kept him strong and healthy for most of his 91-years.
