Wildcats skate past Skidmore for Area Title

VICTORIA – The Weimar Wildcat baseball team had the offensive performance they were hoping for when they drew the Skidmore- Tynan Bobcats for the Area Championship round of the postseason. The Wildcats saw the ball well and found ways to make plays as they scored 21 runs in two games as they swept their second-round opponents. It was not only their offense that led them to victory as they also held their opponents to just four runs in a dominating effort that clinched Weimar’s spot in the regional rounds of the tournament. With this series victory, the Wildcats will now be seeking redemption against the Shiner Comanches for round three. Shiner took the advantage in both district games against the Wildcats, so Weimar will have to find a way to break through starting on Thursday, May 18 at Rice High School.

Shiner took the advantage in both district games against the Wildcats, so Weimar will have to find a way to break through starting on Thursday, May 18 at Rice High School.

Game 1, W, 7-3

The Wildcats got their scoring started early in game one, but building a lead was a slow process throughout the first four innings. They scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning before allowing two runs in the top of the second. The Wildcats responded with another run to tie the game before the Bobcats scored their final run of the game in the top of the third to take a one-run lead. Weimar came back with two runs in each of the next two innings to claim a 6-3 advantage over their opponents. The Wildcats added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth before, but they never had to play the seventh after shutting down Skidmore- Tynan for the final four innings of the game.

Offensively, the Wildcats outhit the Bobcats by an 8-5 margin led by Derek Rees who finished as the only Wildcat to finish with multiple hits with two on his line. Weston Pavlik and Huxton Kloesel made major contributions to the offense as well as they collected two RBIs each.

The Wildcats also got a strong performance from Brady Henke on the mound. After the first three innings where the Bobcats did all of their scoring, Henke locked in and finished out the rest of the game with eight strikeouts to just two walks.

Game 2, W, 14-1

Everything that worked from game one carried over in a big way to game two as the Wildcats dominated the Bobcats to clinch the series sweep. Weimar took advantage of mistakes throughout the game and scored into double digits with nine hits in the game. They got out to a much hotter start in the second game, starting out with a three-run inning in the first followed by two runs in the second. They conceded the Bobcats lone run in the third inning before responding with three more runs in the fourth and six runs in the sixth inning to put the game away. Errors played a huge part in the Wildcats creating such a huge lead as the Bobcats finished with five errors in the field. The defense for Weimar played a huge role as well, finishing the game without a single error and basically shutting down the Skidmore hitters that struck out only four times.

The top of the lineup feasted for the Wildcats as each of the first three batters picked up multiple hits to lead the offense. Brady Henke picked up two hits and added an RBI to the scoring. Wyatt Lacina and Hudson Ervin picked up three hits each and combined for three RBIs. Ervin and Camden Morrison were the only Wildcats to finish with multiple RBIs, picking up two apiece.

Morrison also took care of things on the mound, allowing just two hits against the Bobcats.
