ALTAIR – Weimar’s varsity softball team continues to show that they are one of the best teams in the state and one of the best teams remaining in the UIL state playoffs as they knock off their opponents in each round in convincing fashion. In six games of the postseason so far, they have allowed only two combined runs as they have had outstanding pitching performances and have not had many mistakes on defense. The Ladycats picked up their fourth shutout victory of the playoffs during their last series against district rivals the Schulenburg Lady Horns. Weimar displayed their prowess on both sides of the ball as they won two straight games for the sweep. The Ladycats will get their next opportunity to flex their abilities on Thursday, May 18 in Brenham against the Milano Lady Eagles.
Game 1, W, 18-1
The final score of Weimar’s first game against Schulenburg did not indicate how close much of the game was. The Ladycats opened the game with a run in the first inning and doubled their total in the third with another run while the Lady Horns cut into the lead with a run at the bottom of the third inning with a single run. The Ladycats flipped a switch for the remaining innings as they ran up a large lead and forced the officials to call a mercy- rule finish after the fifth inning. Weimar had a big inning in the fourth with four runs, followed by an offensive explosion in the fifth with 11 runs to push the lead into double digits. Many of Weimar’s 15 hits came in that inning as they put the game away, finishing with a 15-1 advantage in team hits. A trio of Ladycats finished with a team-leading three hits each as Reagan Wick, Paige Pavlu and Taylor Smith contributed plenty to the offense. Smith had a huge game as her 6 RBIs led the team in scores brought home.
Wick and Smith combined on the mound for a strong pitching game as they each gave up just a single walk. Wick had a strong start for the Ladycats, striking out seven batters and conceding the only hit for the Lady Horns.
Game 2, W, 6-0
The Ladycats did not have as explosive of a hitting day in their second game of the series, but they got just enough hitting to create a lead that supported their strong efforts defensively. They once again opened with a single run in the first inning to get the scoring started. They followed up with three runs in the third inning, and one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings before putting the finishing touches on the game with their defense in the top of the seventh. Weimar still had the advantage in hitting despite a quieter game, taking a 7-1 lead in that category.
Taylor Smith had the best game at the plate for the Ladycats, finishing with a team-leading three hits in her three atbats and also bringing in three runners to score. Izzy Reeves, Reagan Wick, Hannah Fisbeck and Kylie Helmcamp contributed one hit each and combined for the final three RBIs to reach their final scoreline.
Smith also had a strong game on the mound as she got the start at pitcher for Weimar. She finished with eight strikeouts before Wick came in to close the door and help secure Weimar’s spot in the regional semifinals.
