The Columbus varsity lady hoops team has not lost many games this season and has not lost in five tries since their two losses in a late-December tournament. In the five games since their last loss to Houston Christian, the Lady Cards have averaged over 55 points per game while holding their opponents to just under 34 points per game. These big wins include their victories last week as Columbus defeated Tidehaven on Tuesday and then Palacios at home on Friday night.
Vs Tidehaven, W, 52-45 While the Lady Cards played through a much tighter game than they are accustomed to, they were still able to hold on for a big win against the Tidehaven Tigerettes. The Lady Cards found much of their success on the offensive end as the teams traded big shots throughout the game. Tidehaven took advantage of their own effectiveness on offense to give Columbus a close game. It was the first time since an early-December game against Alvin that the Lady Cards had allowed a team to score at least 45 points in a victory.
Columbus got a huge game from Karlee Mathis to help lead the offensive attack. She finished with 23 points using the threat of her potent deep range shooting to get open. She knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to her team-leading total. Ally Tribe also had a double-digit scoring game with 12 points, while starting PG Treasure Upson knocked down two 3-pointers of her own to pick up nine points in the game.
Vs Palacios, W, 62-26 The Lady Cards had a much less competitive game to end the week as they hosted the Palacios Sharkettes for the first of their two matchups this season. There was a clear gulf in performance quality as Columbus, the district’s firstplace team, dominated the game in every stage against the last place team in the district. The Lady Cards defeated Palacios by 36 points, their highest margin of victory since a 50-point win against Rice Consolidated earlier in the season.
Columbus was led once again by Karlee Mathis who had a repeat performance from 3-point range. She knocked down five more threes on the way to 17 points which led the team. Ally Tribe finished right behind Mathis with 16 points from a much closer range on the court. Treasure Upson had a strong game defensively with a team-leading six steals.
