Head Coach for the Columbus Lady Cards’ varsity basketball team, Mike Albers, received state-wide honors after claiming the 3A Regional Coach of the Year Award in Region five. Albers claimed his spot in history as one of the first coaches to receive this award in the inaugural year of its existence.
Albers and the Lady Cards had a year worthy of claiming a state-wide award of this nature. Columbus is fresh off of two-straight 30+ win seasons with a record of 31-5 this season after having an undefeated 33-0 regular season in the ‘21-’22 season. The Lady Cards went undefeated in district play with 14-straight wins on the way to their second-straight district championship. Columbus showed their toughness in the postseason with wins some of their closest games of the season. Aside from blowout victories against Poth and Nixon-Smiley, the Lady Cards had slightly above a two-point average margin of victory in their other three playoff wins. Their run to the state title game was cut short by a collision with eventual champion Holliday in the state semifinal match.
Coach Albers helped led the team to become the district’s highest scoring offense and achieve the deepest postseason run in the school’s history.
