COLUMBUS – The Columbus Lady Cardinals have gotten an ideal start to their postseason run after completing a blowout victory against their first-round opponents. Columbus had no issues staying effective offensively as they reached double-digit runs to start their postseason run. The Marion Lady Bulldogs had no answer for the Lady Cards’ potent hitting as Columbus went on to take a resounding 10-0 victory in a one-game elimination in the playoff opener.
The offense took the show for the Lady Cards as they had one of their strongest hitting nights of the season to get the postseason started. They racked up 12 hits in the game as they battered Marion with a steady stream of base hits. The Lady Cards had a strong opening statement, scoring three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. They went on to score four combined runs through the next two innings, and three combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings to push the lead to double digits and force the mercy-rule finish.
On a night where hitting drove most of the story, Madyson Carter had a headliner performance with a big homerun shot as one of her two hits in the game. The Post sisters, Mayson and Mia, had standout performances of their own as they had three hits apiece and combined for three total RBIs. Mia Post and Carter led the team in RBIs with two each. Molly Garcia also had a multi-hit game with two knocks. Columbus not only had good results at the plate, but they also had quality baserunning as they finished with eight stolen bases as a team. Kaylea Foster and Ashlyn Carter led the way in that statistic with three stolen bases apiece.
The Lady Cards also had a strong evening defensively as they started their postseason run with the shutout. The fielders avoided making any errors, and the pitching duo of Mayson Post and Karlee Mathis combined to give up only a single hit to the Lady Bulldog batters. Post got the start and recorded the win with five strikeouts in four innings before Mathis came in to finish things off.
The Lady Cards return to action for round two with a best-of-three series against Cotulla at Joe Gulley Park in Kenedy. Game one will be played on Friday, May 5 at 7 pm. Game two will be played the next day at 1 pm with game three, if necessary, to follow directly after.
