Ladycats inch closer to District Championship

The Weimar Ladycat varsity softball team had just one game left in their regular season following a big win against Louise. While they will still need to take care of business in the finale against Flatonia, the Ladycats have done just about everything they needed to do to claim the District Championship for themselves. Weimar, a team the TGCA has ranked as the fifth best 2A team in the state, put themselves in the pole position in the district standings after beating fellow top-five team Ganado. The Ladycats matched up with the Lady Indians and handed the no. 3 ranked team their second district loss, both of which came at the hands of Weimar. Ganado went on to lose a third district game to Shiner, another team in Weimar’s stacked district that stands in the top 20 of the state poll. With a path to victory in place, the Ladycats got one step closer to achieving their mission of sweeping the end of district season and claiming their second district championship in three years after defeating Louise in a 15-run shutout.

Weimar got the scoring started early against Louise, and they never took their foot off of the pedal in a game that was never competitive. The Ladycats opened the game with a seven-run inning in the first to create a big lead after shutting down Louise at the top of the opener. Weimar followed with six runs in the second and two runs in the third to push the officials to call a mercy-rule final after three innings.

The Ladycats did not need many hits to take a dominating 15-0 victory over their penultimate district opponent. Weimar finished with just five total hits as they took advantage of some strong baserunning and drawing nearly double-digit walks. Not only could Weimar reach base effectively, but they also made it all the way home with relative ease as six different Ladycats scored runs, including Kaelyn Williams who ran in three runs to lead the team. She also led the team in hits with two in the game.

Reagan Wick provided some firepower on both sides of the ball with her pitching performance as well as her work at the plate. Wick finished with a team-leading two RBIs with her lone hit of the game, and she also provided major aid to the defense with a nine-strikeout performance in just three innings of play.

After Weimar’s game against Flatonia on Tuesday, April 18, the Ladycats will know whether they claimed the District Championship or fell into a tie with Shiner for the best district record. The next step for Weimar is what the team has been waiting for all season long: a trip to the postseason and a chance at the state title.

Results to the Flatonia game were not available by the press deadline.
