Wildcats blast Hornets in big win

The Weimar varsity baseball team had one of their best offensive performances of the season against a Louise team that finds itself near the bottom of the district standings. With the Wildcats still shooting for a postseason spot in the standings, they knew they had to handle business against the Hornets and not allow any mistakes that would slow their progress. With that in mind, the Wildcats went on to put on a complete performance, shutting out the Hornets while putting up nearly 30 runs in a huge 28-0 win.

The Wildcats took no time building up a huge lead to claim a strong advantage over their district opponents. The teams played just four innings as Louise never pulled the score close enough to extend the game past a mercy-rule defeat. The Wildcats outplayed their opponents in every aspect of the game, similarly to Weimar’s win over the Hornets in their first matchup earlier this season.

Weimar had a great day at the plate, picking apart the Louise pitchers to pepper the field with base hits. They also drew plenty of walks as pitches in the strike zone were often turned back around for hits. Once runners were aboard, the Wildcats effectively stole bases and took advantage of errors to keep the line moving and bring scores home. The Wildcats left no mistake unpunished as they racked up hits and scores.

Brady Henke had one of the top hitting performances in the game. He went 2-for-3 at the plate, picking up an extra-base hit with a double and also bringing in two runners for scores. Henke also drew a walk as he found success reaching base against Louise. Wyatt Lacina had a strong display of plate discipline for Weimar, drawing two walks and picking up a hit in his only other atbat. Clayton Zinnante led the team in RBIs by batting in three runners with his lone hit of the game.

Defensively, the Wildcats were also on point as some strong pitching by Derek Rees and Camden Morrison combined to hold the Hornets to the shutout. Rees pitched three innings and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts. Morrison relieved Rees and allowed just two hits as the Wildcats cruised to an easy victory. The fielders behind played a clean game as well as they limited their mistakes and finished without any errors.

With two games left in the season including a home tilt against the rival Shiner Comanches, the Wildcats will be hoping to remember and recreate some of the success they found against Louise to end the regular season on a positive note.
