A View Of Columbus Through Rose-Colored Glasses

A View Of Columbus Through Rose-Colored Glasses

This article is dedicated to acknowledging examples of “positives” that express the community spirit of Columbus – our town.

When you take time to acknowledge all the good things around you, it is a fine feeling. Yesterday, I had one of those days and I sense that it is my duty to tell you about that. First, as we welcomed a set of Bed and Breakfast guests from the Gulf Coast area, they announced their purpose for the road trip was to see bluebonnets. The guests requested a map for the next day’s adventures with the flowers. It was not difficult to provide such a map, since Columbus is in the midst of some of the finest fields of bluebonnets and other wildflowers. Hopefully you’ve had the opportunity to drive the countryside and see this year’s crop. Isn’t it picturesque when the field looks as though an artist has combined the blues, pinks, and yellows. Anyone who believes they have to drive to the hill country to see wildflowers needs to be informed of our abundance of those gorgeous bouquets that God and Spring have brought us. So that’s #1 “good thing” if you’re counting.

• Here’s # 2 from my list. When Bob and I feel particularly benevolent, (patient and kind), our Golden Retriever Beamer, is invited on road trips. Yesterday, he joined us in the van to check out some of the adventures in the Round Top Spring Show. He loves the van since our car is a “compact”, “compact”. Beamer is a healthy one hundred and seven pounder who loves to have the last bite of your meal. Frankly, it’s not easy to give him the privilege of a “van trip” since he really loves to get out and join in at every stop. It’s hard to remember that his begging will subside once we are out of sight. If he is allowed to join us “out of the vehicle”, he is absolutely the happiest tailwagging canine in the area. Now to the point – the next stop after Round Top was Bob’s visit to Walmart here in Columbus. Beamer is usually comfortable waiting for Bob in the parking lot with the van windows open. He enjoys sitting on the driver’s seat ( where he truly looks like the driver). His image is extremely tempting to those passing by. At this stop, when Bob returned to the van and Beamer, he found this note on the windshield wiper.

“Your sweet puppy let me pet him and scratch his ears.

Tell him “thank you” for being so sweet.

Absolutely made my day. He/ she is a beautiful dog. Thank you.”

Signed: Donna – the weird person parked next to you.

Donna, you made our day – thank you.

• Now to #3 “good thing”. Aren’t we proud of the new sidewalks and the beautiful Leyco building on Walnut. Both are symbols of a “Better Columbus” and the progress of our town.

• Here’s #4 “good thing”. At the Methodist Women’s Tuesday Bible study, I mentioned a lost poem that I had searched for forty years. Somehow, I had misplaced the poem and never found a copy. Two days later, I received an anonymous text message on my phone with a copy of the lost poem. I didn’t recognize the telephone number. Early the next morning, I called my mystery friend and it was no surprise that Kathy Pustejovsky was the good Samaritan. Thank you, Kathy.

One final “good thing” - #5 happened when Bob and I attended the benefit for the Live Oak Art Center. The benefit was a song writer’s gig donated by Darrel Appelt and Phillip Brummett. These two have formed a special blue chip sound in vocal and instrumental performance. Thank you, Darrel and Phillip.

I hope you will see your version of “good things” in our town and in your life.
