Two teams have separated themselves from the rest of the pack when it comes to the district standings. The Lady Cards are one of the few teams that have just one district loss this season. The other team with one loss, the Hallettsville Brahmettes, gave Columbus their lone district defeat during an earlier game for their first matchup this season. After securing a blowout win over the Rice Lady Raiders early last week, the Lady Cards hosted Hallettsville for a game that had major implications in the district championship race. Columbus got their revenge in one of the tightest games of the season as they paid the Brahmettes back by giving them their first district loss and moving into a tie for first place in the district.
Vs Rice, W, 10-0
Columbus had a great start as they faced off against the Lady Raiders away from home to start the week. Offensively, they were able to move through the base path and score a lot of runs early on, and they outhit Rice by an 8-2 margin. After opening with two runs in the first inning, the Lady Cards responded with five runs in the second, and three runs through the next two innings to reach their final score. While their offense was having a solid outing, they were also on point defensively as the Lady Raiders failed to score a run in the game.
Mia Post had a lot to do with the defensive effectiveness, pitching in every inning while striking out seven batters. Post also made an impact on the offensive end as she and Ashlyn Carter tied for the team lead in hits with two apiece along with an RBI each. Sydnie Shepard had the big swing of the game, bringing in three runners with her lone hit.
Vs Hallettsville, W, 7-6
The Lady Cards’ most important game of the season came with some stress as Columbus had to battle back from a relatively large deficit to claim the victory. Columbus struggled to score against a Hallettsville defense that gave the Lady Cards issues at the plate. The Brahmettes held Columbus scoreless in each of the first five innings while adding to their own lead with an effective, double-digit hitting performance.
The sixth inning is where the Lady Cards’ fortunes flipped as they took advantage of several miscues by the Hallettsville pitching staff and defense. The Brahmettes committed three errors as well as five wild pitches that allowed the Columbus runners to move through the base path and score at home. The Lady Cards scored all of their runs in that decisive sixth inning with just a single recorded hit.
The victory moved Columbus into a tie for first place with Hallettsville as the teams look to decide the district winner with just five games remaining.
