EAGLE LAKE — On March 30, the Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club welcomed the Honorable Judge Stan Warfield Justice of the Peace, Colorado County, Precinct 4 and his Chief Clerk of Court, Laura Maldonado.
Maldonado gave a presentation titled “A Visit to the Justice of the Peace.” She and Judge Warfield took turns narrating the presentation.
The Lions said they learned some of the duties of a Justice of the Peace, such as hearing cases pertaining to traffic, Class C misdemeanors, civil cases up to $20,000 in controversy, landlord and tenant disputes, and truancy cases. They also learned that performing magistrate duties and conducts inquests are also part of the Justice of the Peace’s duties.
They also received an overview of the Chief Clerk of Court’s role. The Lions said they learned she plays an essential role in keeping the office and the court running smoothly. She prepares and issues orders of the court, prepares dockets, examines legal documents, searches files and contacts witnesses, attorneys or litigants, prepares schedules, swears in juries and instructs parties about the timing of court appearances.
The Lions said, together, the Chief Clerk of Court and Justice of the Peace work as a team to provide justice to the Eagle Lake area.
