An 18-wheeler fire caused a bit of confusion April 17, as both the Weimar Volunteer Fire Department and Columbus Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene of the flames.

At 4 a.m. that morning, due to confusion about the reported location of the fire, CVFD and WVFD volunteers responded to multiple reports of a “vehicle on fire” between the IH-10 westbound rest area from mile marker 692 to mile marker 689 on the east side of IH-10.

Both departments responded to ensure full coverage of the area, including the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office and Delgado’s Wrecker Service, finding the 18-wheeler tractor on fire at the Hatterman Lane exit ramp, which is located within Weimar’s response territory.

They worked together to suppress the fire and eventually extinguish it, which had engulfed the tandem axles and tire assemblies.

The trailer rolled over due to the location where the driver stopped and disconnected the truck from his load, which was at an angle when he unlocked his fifth wheel, leading it to roll over into the ditch.

An 18-wheeler fire caused a bit of confusion with its location but was ultimately found and contained after both the Weimar VFD and Columbus VFD were called to action early morning on April 17.

The 18-wheeler driver was able to escape the truck fire without any injuries.

Later the next week early evening, April 21, CVFD volunteers attempted to save to quench a house fire on 500 Charter St. but were unable to save the home, leading to a total loss.

Around 6:45 p.m. that night, the CVFD were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call from the owner of the home, who escaped the house fire and called 911.

The ball of flames was contained to the garage, awning and attic space, but was unable to be saved from total destruction.

The Freslburg Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for manpower and a RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). Colorado County EMS was also on scene for rehab and safety, while the Columbus Police Department provided traffic control and security. Columbus Utilities responded for gas and water shutoff while AEP disconnected the power.

Several CVFD retirees showed up to assist with drinking water and helping manage water supply operations.

The fire is believed to have been caused by farm animals, specifically goats, alleged to have chewed on wiring under the carport. No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.
