Nine Cardinals selected to Soccer All-District team

The Columbus Cardinals boys’ soccer team had nine of its players selected to the All-District team for the 2025 season.

In addition to that they also had nine players selected to the Academic All-District team.

Starting things off is Mario Rubio who was selected as the Utility Player of the Year. This comes as no surprise to fans of the team and his teammates; Rubio wore many hats for the Cardinals soccer team and never complained once.

Rubio was also selected to be a part of the first All-District team along with his teammate Jesus Mendoza. Both are juniors and both are honored to be selected but will have a chip on their shoulder to get their team back into the playoffs next season.

The second All-District team saw only one Cardinal selected and that was freshman Alvaro Gonzalez. To make an impact on a team as a freshman is not easy to accomplish but Gonzalez did just that.

He helped the Cardinals achieve a 5-6-3 district record just one spot outside of playoffs and will be looking to return next season to help get the Cards back in the post-season.

Six players were named as honorable mentions, three juniors and three freshmen. The juniors were Giovanni Martinez, Elijah Capiro and Elijah Owen, the freshmen were Christian Martinez, Ethan Hovis and Irving Giles.

The juniors in this group played their role to perfection, just because they were Honorable Mentions does not mean they were not crucial to the team. These guys helped keep things stable through all the highs and lows of a season.

Meanwhile the freshmen came in a played with energy and excitement but also carried themselves with some maturity both on and off the field.

As for the Academic All-State team the nine players selected were senior Joel Rubio, junior Elijah Capiro, junior Giovanni Martinez, junior Jesus Mendoza, junior Mario Rubio, sophomore Jorge Mendoza, freshman Alvaro Gonzalez, freshman Ethan Hovis and freshman Christian Martinez.

To be selected to the Academic All-District team a player must be contributing on the field and taking care of business in the classroom. The base requirement to be selected to this team is to have a 3.5 GPA, something that all nine players achieved.

Congratulations to the Cardinals and their players for an exciting season.
