Weimar gets huge blowout win

The Weimar Wildcats had some positive outcomes from their games last week despite splitting their two games. The first of the two matchups was a competitive loss to Schulenburg that led to the Wildcats falling just short in their game against the second-place team in the district. Their second game of the week was one of their best games of the season as they dominated the Louise Hornets throughout the entirety of the game outside of a tight first quarter.

Vs Schulenburg, L, 41-46

The Wildcats started the game with a strong effort offensively and scored into double digits with an 11-point opening statement. Their two-point lead did not survive a push by Schulenburg in the second quarter. The Shorthorns scored 15 points in the second to create a five-point lead going into the halftime break. They extended it to nine points to end the third quarter as they once again played some strong defense against Weimar. Weimar responded with a a big effort in the fourth to try to cut into the lead. They scored 15 points, but they allowed Schulenburg to score into double digits as well as they never got close enough to truly threaten taking the lead from their opponents.

The leading scorer for Weimar was Derek Rees who finished with 12 points for the Wildcats. He was followed by Dreylon Mc-Millian and Marcus Castillo who each contributed eight points to the team’s total offense. Brady Henke pitched in seven points of his own. Rees took the team lead for steals with three, and Mcmillian tied with Huxton Kloesel for the team lead in rebounds with six boards.

Vs Louise, W, 62-44

The Wildcats got a nearly 20-point win against Louise after a hot shooting performance as well as some strong defensive effort. Several different players were able to be effective in this game as they combined for one of their best offensive outputs of the season. The first period was tight for both teams as they matched each other bucket- for-bucket. Weimar’s fortunes changed in the second quarter as the shots started to fall and the Hornets started to make mistakes.

Brady Henke did major damage from the outside in the first half, knocking down a couple of his signature, leg kick three-pointers to start increasing the lead for the Wildcats. He unlocked the deep-range shooting for the rest of the team as Derek Rees, Zachary Norrell and Chris Moreno all knocked down long-distance shots as well. Henke finished with a team-leading 23 points for the Wildcats. Huxton Kloesel, Camden Morrison and Jerron Fisher contributed nine points apiece. Kloesel had the team-high in rebounds with six, and Fisher led the way with steals and assists by picking up five of each.

The team benefitted from some intense full-court pressure as they forced a high number of turnovers of which they took advantage.
