COLUMBUS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Assist law enforcement in Colorado River incident

The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department never fails to see anything short out of the ordinary, attending calls for an out-of-control controlled burn and assisting law enforcement on the Colorado River last week, April 9 and April 12.

The CVFD were called to aid Colorado County law enforcement on the Colorado River last Wednesday evening, April 9, after receiving a call for aid by the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office to transport two deputies to pick a man up and bring him back to Beason’s Park.

A rescue boat, donated by Todd Barten and Morgan Barten, helped the CVFD respond to the call for assistance by Colorado County law enforcement demonstrating how vital the boat is to the CVFD’s fleet or vehicles.

“We’re proud to stand ready, on land or water, whenever our community needs us,” said the CVFD. “We’re immensely grateful for the support that keeps us equipped and ready to respond.”

More details to come from the Colorado River incident as an investigation by the CCSO progresses.

Just three days later the same week, CVFD firefighters responded to an out-of-control controlled burn call Saturday afternoon, April 12, on Dee Allen Road.

The blaze was driven by the wind into nearby vegetation that could’ve potentially escalated into a wildfire if not for the swift action of the Columbus firefighters around 1:20 p.m. that day.

Firefighters were just returning from a PR easter event in Columbus at the Tractor Supply located in town when they received the call, hopping quickly into action having had a crew ready at the station.

“Thanks to the quick action of personnel on the property who immediately called the fire in,” said the CVFD. “And the fact we had a crew already at the station after returning from a PR event, our firefighters were able to quickly knock down the falmes before they extended deeper into the surrounding wooded area, potentially escalating into a wildfire requiring a larger multi-agency response.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire call that day.
