The Weimar Ladycats won the District Championship in golf recently at Victoria Country Club and one Weimar Wildcat scored well enough to qualify for regionals.
The Ladycats with a final score of 401 shots to come in first place and their head coach, Cory Morrison, said that when they have their full lineup, they are a tough team to beat.
“When we have had a full team, we have been at the top of pretty much every tournament we played,” Morrison said.
Golf can be a frustrating and confidence crushing sport, one shot you hit really well, the next you chunk the shot, and your score goes up. Morrison said his team never really let the game rough up their confidence too much and said they played well all season long because of it.
“We have been successful all year long and we just kind of carried that into the district tournament,” Morrison said. “We kind of knew what we needed to do at the district tournament and all five girls, did what I thought was going to happen, and that was to go out there and do what they have done all year long and is play good steady golf.”
At the district tournament the Ladycats were led by Samantha Linchnovsky who shot an 87. This was good enough to win the district championship as an individual and it obviously helped her team’s score to win the District Championship as a team. The district runner up for the individual scores was Taylor Smith who shot a 92 at the district tournament. Harley Thornhill shot a 109 for the Ladycats, Cheyenne Booker shot a 113 and Hailey Martinez shot a 155 for the Ladycats to win the District Championship.
As for the Wildcat that qualified for the regional tournament, Collin Morrison shot a 97 at the district tournament. His coach was very pound of his performance considering they had to play on a tougher course.
“Collin was able to put together a pretty decent round, of course we played in Victoria, it was a longer course, much tougher course,” Cory Morrison said. “It had some not-sogreat spots on it, but he held it together and ended up getting the second spot by one stroke over a boy from Flatonia.”
Cory Morrison said Collin handled the adversity well but both of his team’s managed the conditions very well.
“We played at Victoria Country Club, and they had that big rain, the weekend before we played. There were a lot of spots out there that were not good conditions, the greens were a little tough,” Cory Morrison said. “I thought overall both teams did well, we had ups and downs all day long, we started at 9 a.m. and our last girls’ group did not come off until about 5 p.m. It was a long grueling day, but I thought they did a great job.”
The Ladycats and Collin Morrison now begin prep for their next tournament in the fine sport of golf.
