Good Friday service to take place April 18

Community Good Friday Service will be held on Friday, April 18, at 12:05 p.m., hosted at First United Methodist Church located at 301 W. St. Charles Street in Weimar with Rev. Grethe Delaney of Equippers Outreach Church as preacher.

Such observances serve as a poignant reminder of the central message of Christianity—love, sacrifice, and forgiveness. Jesus gives his all for the sake of all.

Other local ministers will be participating. Rev. Herb Beyer of Faith Lutheran Church, Rev. Jimmy Watson of Weimar United Church, Rev. Glen Schoeneberg of Trinity Church, Rev. Mary Cline of First United Methodist Church, Msgr. John Peters and Father Case Goodman of St. Michael Catholic Church and Rev. Rick Perkins of Calvary Baptist.

Good Friday, observed on April 18, commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus by the Romans in Jerusalem. Condemned by Jewish religious leaders, Jesus was sentenced to crucifixion by Pontius Pilate, a Roman leader.

He was publicly beaten and forced to carry a heavy wooden cross through the streets before being nailed to the cross, where he died. It is a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting for Christians worldwide. Good Friday is preceded by Maundy Thursday and followed by Easter Sunday.

The day is observed with prayers, fasting, and almsgiving, with many people attending religious services such as our Community Good Friday Service held in Weimar. Good Friday is a time for acts of charity and compassion, reflecting Jesus Christ’s selfless love and sacrifice for humanity. An offering will be received at the Community Service to assist the Weimar Ministerial Alliance of Churches in helping the poor and needy. For Christians, Good Friday symbolizes Jesus Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for the forgiveness of humanity’s sins. The debt of sin has been paid in full. It is a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting, with prayers for liberation from pain and suffering. Jesus’ death signifies the end of all sins and the possibility of a new beginning, culminating in his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Good Friday is not celebrated but observed with reverence. Churches worldwide hold special services, including readings from the Bible, hymns of reflection, and prayers for forgiveness. Some regions observe Good Friday as a public holiday, allowing people to visit churches and reflect on the significance of the day.
