The Weimar Ladycats have won the District Championship in track for the 2025 season.
The Ladycats put in a ton of extra work starting in the summer that ultimately led to them winning a District Championship.
“It is a fantastic accomplishment!” Ladycats head coach Terra Griffin said. “I believe the work to make this happen started last summer. We have been working hard to improve our numbers at our summer strength and conditioning program.”
It’s the old cliché in sports and in life, to do the work when no one is looking and the Ladycats took that to heart this summer.
“These girls really bought in and showed up throughout the summer,” Griffin said. “They have been putting hard work in together.”
These workouts helped bond the team, they were able to spend a little more time together instead of waiting for track practices to open up. This bond strengthened because of the conditions they had to endure, like getting up and going run at 6 a.m. which is every high school kid’s favorite thing to do.
Not only that, but the players also even took it upon themselves to organize “mini practices” just to get on the track and spend time with one another.
“As we got closer to the start of track season you would see some of them after school, organizing mini practices and just spending time together at the track,” Griffin said.
Last season the Ladycats saw a lot of success of the track but unfortunately lost out to Shiner and Schulenburg and Griffin said they were not particularly close last year despite having the talent. This helped add fuel to the fire to get the Ladycats over the hump this season.
“This is actually a big part of what motivated us. The talent is here and to be that far off of a district title last year was not ok,” Griffin said. “All of these girls knew that and understood that it was going to require us to work harder. We have only two seniors and they have done a great job of being leaders and captains.”
While Griffin highlighted the players that returned from last season, she also made sure that her underclassman got the spotlight the deserve as well.
“Another big part of our success this year is a fantastic freshman class,” Griffin said. “They are talented, hardworking and driven individuals. They have fit in wonderfully and have brought a competitive spirit to everything we do. It is always good to have some healthy competition between athletes for various sports.”
The Ladycats are now ready for the Area Meet and Griffin said fans can expect to see these girls fight till the very end.
“These girls love to win but they hate to lose even more,” Griffin said. “They are excited to be there and thrive in the spotlight. I am incredibly proud of these girls, top to bottom. Every single one of them is a huge part of our success.”
The Area Meet is scheduled for next week and the Ladycats will look to keep their season alive by qualifying for the Regional Meet.
