Raiders win District Championship

The Rice Raiders have won back-to-back track District Championships after reclaiming the title on Thursday on their home field.

The Raider so obviously had a great outing at the District Meet so let’s take a look at how they fared in each event to win the District Championship.

In the 200m dash Braylon James was the lone Raider in the race, he came in 7th place during the final heat. James finished with a time of 23.48 seconds.

In the 400m Jon Woods and Jael Valles-Serrano finished in 1st and 2nd place respectively and gave the Raiders a nice boost points wise. Woods finished with a time of 52.14 seconds while Valles-Serrano finished with a time of 52.31 seconds.

Valles-Serrano made his return to the track in the 800m race and took home gold. He came in 1st place in the 800m with a time of 2 minutes and four seconds, and two seconds behind were a couple of his teammates.

Lance Dingler and Jake Morales came in 3rd and 5th place in the 800m and they were only separated by fractions of a second. Dingler finished with a time of 2:06.63 and Morales finished with a time of 2:06.81, it could not have been a tighter race between teammates.

In the 1600m the Raiders dominance continued with Payton Englebrecht to take home 1st place for the Raiders. He finished with a time of 4 minutes and 50 seconds and Valles-Serrano and Morales were right a second behind in 2nd and 3rd place.

Like in the 800m these two Raiders were separated by only fractions of a second. Valles-Serrano finished with a time of $:51.39 and Morales finished with a time of 4:51.62.

In the 3200m Engelbrecht, Dingler and Morales were back at it, and they came in 1st, 2nd and 4th place. Engelbrecht led the pack with an official time of 10 minutes and 50 seconds, Dingler was close behind with a time of 10 minutes and 51 seconds and then finally was Morales with a time of 10 minutes and 54 seconds.

The 300m hurdles saw Tamarion Turner take home a bronze medal with a time of 43.27 seconds.

In the 4x100m the team of James, Robert Bennett, Ke’undric Pratt and Isaiah Castillo came in 5th place with a time of 44.57 seconds. In the 4x200m the same team ran except for Bennett who was swapped for Jace Upson, and they came in 3rd place with a time of one minute and 32 seconds.

In the 4x400m the team of Woods Upson, AJ Jenkins and Castillo came in 2nd place with a time of three minutes and 28 seconds.

In the field events the Raiders had an even stronger performance, in the high jump Woods, Bennett and Jenkins came in 2nd,3rd and 4th place with jumps of 5’10, 5’8 and 5’6 respectively.

In the long jump Turner came in 7th place with a jump of 20 feet “0.5” and then Woods participated in the triple jump where he broke the school record, he just set with a jump of 44 feet “11.25”. Jenkins joined Woods in the triple jump and recorded a jump of 40 feet “9.5” to come in 8th place.

The pole vault event saw two Raiders come in 3rd and 6th place, Gabe Barrios recorded a jump of 12 feet “6” to come in 3rd and James recorded a jump of 11 feet to come in 6th place. In the Discus Dyren Johnson and RJ Myers came in 2nd and 3rd place with throws of 149 feet “7” and 143 feet “11”.

Then Myers took home gold in the shot-put event with a throw of 53 feet “0.5”.

The Raiders performed extremely well at the District Meet and now set their sights on the Area Meet which will be held next week.
