Hotly contested city campaign goes to voters Residents of Columbus will go to the polls Saturday and decide: -Who is going to be their mayor for the next 2 years.

-Who will serve on their city council for the next 2 years.

-And whether to approve a $130,000 bond issue.

The polls, located in the city offices, will open at 8 a.m., and close at 7 p.m.

A heavier than average voter turnout is expected. A total of 32 absentee ballots have been voted-the heaviest absentee vote in city history.

It’s getting so a fellow can’t trust anybody On Monday afternoon Ruben Gonzales Adame of Alvin, a college student at San Marcos, stopped for a hitchhiker on I-10 east of Columbus.

Little did he know then that it would be the undoing of both him and the hitchhiker, Thomas Raymond Smith, 25, of Long Island, N.Y.

Adame drove passed Columbus on I-10 with his passenger and stopped at the rest stop 2 miles west of town. While he was using the restroom, the sheriff’s office said, Smith drove off with Adame’s car.

Card band places first in state meet The Cardinal band was judged one of the outstanding bands at the state contest in San Antonio Friday and was presented one of 2 special award plaques given to class B high schools for making first division in sight reading, concert playing and marching, Band Director Oren Johnson announces.

This means they may compete in the tri-state meet in Enid, Okla, where bands from 3 other states will participate, Columbus Roatrians are attempting to raise funds to send the band to the meet.

Hasse and Johnson reelected County Board Members

Six trustees were reelected and 1 now member elected to 5 district school boards and 2 were reelected to the county school board in Saturday’s election.

Lester Johnson was reelected county trustee at large and N.W. Hansen was reelected to the board from Precinct 2.

In the Sheridan district, C.K. Carlson, Carl C. Williams and Alfred T. Blanchard were reelected. H.A. Johnson and Billy Powell, who were unopposed, were elected to the Rock Island Board.

100 YEARS AGO

Pythians present medal to Dr. Payne Dr. J. H. Payne, who last week returned from Ft. Worth where he was under treatment in a hospital, was the recipient of a rather unusual honor Monday evening when the Chancellor Commander of the local lodge Knights of Pythias, with a committee composed of B.H. Meinert, J.E. Hester and Henry Hurr, waited upon him at his home and presented a Knights of Pythias Veteran Jewel, indicating a recognition of his twenty five years or more of faithful service and continuous membership in the order.

Hurt in auto accident Miss Vera Mayes of this city was painfully hurt in an auto accident last Thursday night when the driver of the car dropped unto a doze and allowed the car to leave the road turning completely over.

The party had attended a dance at Schulenberg and were returning to Eagle Lake where Miss Vera was visiting Miss Dorine Brower. The accident occurred about a mile and a half west of Eagle Lake.
