The Columbus Cardinals made the trip down State Highway 71 to Rice Consolidated High School to compete in the Swamp Relays.
The field events were canceled which allowed plenty of opportunity for the runners to make a big impression.
The weather was grim and dreary, but the Cards came to this meet ready to make a statement. From the opening race they ran with urgency because they know the District Meet is just around the corner and want to be at their best when that comes.
The Cardinals got started in the 100m dash where Braylon Fisher had the best time. He finished the race in 11.42 seconds and was awarded 5th place for his effort.
Not too far behind him was Giovanni Martinez in 14th place with a time of 11.85 seconds. .25 seconds later Rylan Carruthers finished the race in 19th place with a time of 12 seconds flat.
In the 200m race Fisher once again led the Cards with a time of 23.70 seconds to come in 8th place. Next was Bryan Salzar who came in 11th place with a time of 23.85 seconds and then in 21st place was Martinez with a recorded time of 24.71 seconds.
The 400m race had only one Cardinal in it and that was Carruthers who came in 4th place for the Cards with a time of 52.98 seconds.
As for the relay teams, the Cards competed in the 4x100m, the 4x200m and the 4x400m races. In the 4x100m the team of Xavier Woods, Elijah Usher, Brennan Hicks and Braylon Fisher came in 3rd place with a time of 44.1 seconds, in the 4x200m race the team of Bryan Salazar, Jack Schobel, Woods and Hicks came in 6th with a time of one minute and 32 seconds and the 4x400m the team of Hicks, Woods, Ryan Carruthers and Giovanni Martinez came in 4th place with a time of three minutes and 36 seconds.
The Cards are looking ahead to the District Meet where they will try to beat the times they posted at the Swamp Relays.
