RECORD BROKEN AT POWERLIFTING MEET

John Mendoza and Kennan Hailey are two powerlifters for the Rice Raiders that made quite the impression at the State Powerlifting Meet in Abeline.

Mendoza left the State meet as the Division 3 132-pound State Champion while Hailey set the state record with a 620-pound deadlift.

Mendoza claimed his trophy and title of Strongest in the State by lifting a total of 1,355 pounds at the state meet. For reference that’s equivalent to this young man lifting a horse or a grand piano.

He squatted 530 pounds, bench pressed 380 pounds and deadlifted 445 pounds on his way to winning a State Championship for the Rice Raiders.

As for Hailey he lifted a grand total of 1,675 pounds at the State meet in the 308-pound weight class. For reference he lifted the equivalent he lifted a large cow or an elephant seal, quite the feat for the young lifter.

He squatted 630 pounds, bench pressed 425 pounds and finally set the State record with a 620-pound deadlift. Obviously, Hailey wanted to win the State Championship but to have his name etched into the history books with his record shattered deadlift is just as rewarding.

Congratulations to Medoza and Hailey on their accomplishments, t’s been a long and hard season for these athletes and to see it end with a State Championship and a State Record is truly special.
