Deputy’s car demolished in crash here Deputy Charles Mc-Caleb, on his way home Wednesday night, March 19, lost control of his patrol car on S.H. 71 about one-half mile north of Columbus.
The car ran off the highway into a ditch on the left-hand side, struck a culvert and overturned. The car, a 1972 model, was totally demolished.
McCaleb, who previously had been involved in another accident involving a county patrol car, was treated and released at Columbus’ Hospital.
FFA Auction Totals $30,199 The 32nd annual FFA Livestock and Poultry Project Show netted a total of $30,199, FFA officials announced this week.
The total was shy of the record high of $33,006 set in 1974 but was considered quite high in light of present economic conditions.
“We were pleased with the results,” said FFA Advisor Nolan Blaschke, “particularly with the way the economy is today.”
The 10 calves brought a total of $6,488, the 37 hogs $11,135, the 27 lambs $5,910, the 4 turkey entries $1,190 and the 8 capon entries$1,785 and 17 entries of fryers $3,710.
Champion Calf
Kenneth Koehl exhibited the grand champion calf, a 746-pounder, purchased by Jerry Mikeska for $895, or $1.20 a pound.
The reserve champion, a 670-pound Hereford, show by Bill Friedrich, brought $1,072, or $1,60 a pound from J. & S. Ranch.

Local concrete works plans big business soon In the manufacture of ‘Duntile,’ a new commercial building product, the Columbus Concrete Products Works is looking forward to a business of no little importance to this city and community.
New machinery has been ordered and is expected to arrive here inside of the next thirty days, which will make it possible for this company to manufacture an immense output of building tile, glazed tile, drainage tile, concrete brick and kindred substances.
The company will specialize on the manufacture of “Duntile” which it is said will “build better buildings cheaper.” This product is expected to revolutionize the building industry when it is available at close range.
Purchases ice plant A deal was closed last week whereby the Citizens Ice & Cold Storage Co, was transferred to Me. E.E. Irwin.
Mr. Irwin is one of the best posted and most capable ice manufacturing men in the state and has had long and wide experience in this line of business. He comes here from Elgin, Texas, where he has been operating an ice plant for some time.
The new owner has already taken charge of the plant and is having some extensive alterations in the arrangement of machinery and equipment made and will put the plant into shape to produce the highest quality ice and render patrons of the company the best and most reliable service possible.
Food demonstrations to be given here The Citizen has learned that arrangements have been made for food demonstrations of the Rice Hotel Products to be given at the Hastedt & Wirtz store here on Monday, March 23rd., at the Hastedt & Wirtz store at Glidden on Thursday, March 26th. And at Fehrenkamp Bros. Store on Friday, March 27th.
Food experts will demonstrate some of the 1-1 articles that are sold under the Rice Hotel brand.
Valuable prizes will be given away at all three stores, and lunch will be served throughout the day.
