11 Cards named to All-District team

11 Cards named to All-District team
Elijah Usher (#2) and Rylan Carruthers (#23) were both named to the All-District team as an honorable mention and to the 2nd All-District team.

Fresh off of earning a silver medal for their hard work this season the Columbus Cardinals had 11 players named to the All-District team.

Of the 11 players named to the team on of the was named offensive MVP and that was Grayson Rigdon.

That comes as no surprise to fans of the team as they witnessed Rigdon drive the Cardinals offense night in and night out. He dazzled on the box score especially late in the playoffs where he scored 45 points in round four, 48 points in round five and then finally he scored 31 points in the State Championship game. While Rigdon was a big factor for the Cardinals there was one other player that had an underrated season.

Cardinals junior guard Eddie Garcia was awarded the sixth man of the year award. Garcia came off the bench for the Cardinals in relief for players to rest and recover during a game Garcia always made a positive impact on whatever game he checked into and that helped him earn his spot as Sixth Man of the Year.

Camdon Pitchford was the next Cardinal to appear on this list he was selected to the First All-District team. Pitchford is one of the hardest workers on the team, he may not score a bunch of points every game, even though he is very capable of doing just that.

He is a hard-nosed player that is not scared to get into the dirty areas of the court and is always willing to sacrifice parts of his game for team success. He was an aggressive defender, a master passer and a fierce teammate, all three boosted him to a spot on the 1st All-District team.

As for the 2nd All-District team three Cardinals were selected, Brody Tribe, Rylan Carruthers and Braylon Fisher. All three of these guys shouldered the load for the rebound battle all season long.

Tribe and Carruthers are two massive young men that are strong like horses so some games they were bullying the opposition some games. While their primary job was to snatch up rebounds, they were also effective on offense when they needed to be.

Fisher is not quite as big as Tribe and Carruthers but he’s strong in his own right and has unbelievable athleticism. Not many players beat Fisher down the court on a fast break because of his blazing speed.

On top of that he could jump out of the gym so some games he met players at the rim and swatted the ball away with his leaping ability.

Four Cardinals were Honorable Mentions for the All-District team, and they were Elijah Usher, Brody Vinklarek, Wyatt Tipton and Bryan Salazar. All four of these guys were mentioned by head coach Troy Bohac as guys that don’t play a ton of minutes for the Cards, but he had the utmost confidence in when they entered the game.

Like Garcia these guys rarely had negative players and in fact it was Usher who helped keep the season alive after making two free throws in overtime in round three of the playoffs.

Congratulations to the Columbus Cardinals on what has been a historical season.
