Leaving home to make some changes

VIEWPOINT OF A TEXAS CHALLENGE ACADEMY CADET

When my mom first told me about Texas ChalleNGe Academy, I had no idea what the program was about. She told me it was a school designed for teenagers who are struggling in school and in life.

I decided it might be for me. My mom has had to take care of me and my three siblings. My little brother, Conner, has been sick, and there are two younger than me that cause lots of chaos. TCA will give me the opportunity to get my GED and not return to high school. Because of that, I will be able to help my mother.

It is not easy being here all the time, but I am stepping up my game and making it so that I can return back as a strong and caring older sister and be a role model for the younger kids.

Here at TCA, each platoon competes in things like drill and ceremony and other things to earn ribbons for our platoon flag. We have received both the DC and the redemption ribbon, and they look good on our guide on flag.

As I am writing this, Charlie has earned one platoon ribbon, but Delta has yet to earn one. But I am sure that this will all change as we move further along.

My platoon is the smallest bay of girls, but we are strong, courageous, and independent. In Acclamation, they called us the Eaglets because we were learning and adapting to our new homes, but now we are mighty and soaring high.

TCA is shaping me for my future and is a good place for those who are struggling in school, life, or at home. I’m looking forward to earning more ribbons for our guide on flag and completing the challenge.
