Ladycats cruise over spring break to two blowout wins

The Ladycats’ varsity softball team has been putting up impressive performances all season led by effective hitting down the lineup and solid fielding with elite pitching. Each of these elements came together well for Weimar over the spring break holiday as they took a pair of relatively stressfree victories against district opponents. With strong outings from starting pitcher Reagan Wick who pitched two complete games over the break, the Ladycats allowed only one run from the two games combined.

Vs Ganado, W, 9-0

The Ladycats took advantage of many Ganado mistakes to take a shutout victory to begin the week. The Lady Indians had six miscues throughout the game that helped Weimar reach base on the offensive side of the ball. With some hot hitting and a little help from the opponents, the Ladycats followed up their three runs in the first four innings with four runs in the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth to push the game to its final margin. After slowly building up the lead to begin the game, Weimar began picking up steam and eventually buried Ganado under an avalanche of base hits. Paige Pavlu led the offense with three hits while Taylor Smith and Madison Luckey knocked in two runs each.

The defense had a relatively clean game backing up Reagan Wick on the mound who had another impressive outing. She notched ten strikeouts for another double-digit effort and allowed just three hits in the shutout effort.

Vs Needville, W, 6-1

The Lady Jays proved to be a different challenge for the Ladycats as Needville limited the number of errors they committed compared to Weimar’s opponent the previous day. Despite a cleaner game by their opponents, the Ladycats still found ways to get the ball into the outfield on offense and keep the lineup moving. They did their work early this time, scoring four runs in the opening inning to establish a firm hold on the game. They followed up with runs in each of the next two innings to create a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game. Izzy Reeves led the team with two hits while Kylie Helmcamp notched two RBIs for the offense.

The defense benefitted from another gem performance by Reagan Wick who clocked in another complete game for Weimar. She struck out 16 batters through her seven innings of work as she and the defense held Needville scoreless in each of the first six innings of the game. The Lady Jays managed just one run in the seventh as they made the final effort to get back into the game, but it was all they could do as they avoided the shutout defeat.
