The Dilue Rose Harris chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) sponsors two contests locally each year. One is for 4th graders to create artwork depicting Texas history up to 1850. The other contest is for 7th graders on a Texas History subject chosen by DRT headquarters.

In January, a total of 116 entries were received from 4th graders throughout Columbus to include Ms. Sharon Hajovsky’s class at St. Anthony’s (SAS), Ms. Tammy Ruether, Mr. Mark Vickers, and Ms. Kristen Mraz classes from Columbus Elementary (CES), and Ms. Kelli Hickman’s class from the Live Oak Art Center After School Program.

Local winners are Peyton Guzman (1st), Beau Neal (2nd), and Kennedy Combs (3rd). All submissions were forwarded to the Republic of Texas Museum in Austin for further judging.

Additionally, in February, Danette Cantu’s SAS 7th graders were challenged with an essay topic, “Which site should be considered the birthplace of the Republic of Texas; West Columbia, Washington- on-the-Brazos, or San Jacinto?” Students were able to visit the Bill Stein Room at Nesbitt Library to help with their research.

Top essays were composed by Kaden Glueck (1st), Isabella Lowe (2nd), and Wyatt Pool (3rd). Kaden’s essay has the opportunity to continue on to judging at the district and/or state level.

All students received a certificate for their hard work, study, and creativity, with winners receiving an additional small monetary award.
