The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department had a rather busy week, responding to multiple car accidents and fires, albeit small ones, last week starting on Feb. 25.
The CVFD responded to heavy traffic last Tuesday morning on I-10 Eastbound due to multiple multi-vehicle accidents between Exit 699 (FM 102) and Exit 704 (FM 949).
That same afternoon at around 1:30 p.m., the CVFD was dispatched to a controlled burn that “got out of hand” on CR 151.
What “started as a small burn pile” quickly spread due to strong winds, a “reminder of how unpredictable fire can be” according to a Facebook post made by the CVFD.
Last Friday, Feb. 28, the CVFD responded to two seperate incidents, beginning with a small grass fire along Hwy 71 near Marek Road.
The fire was apparently caused by tire rubber from an 18-wheeler driving along the path, according to the CVFD.
Shortly after the first call responded to, the CVFD were dispatched to assist Frelsburg Volunteer Fire Department with a major accident on Venghaus George Road.
A full-size pickup truck left the roadway, rolled down an embankment and came to rest against two sycamore trees near the creek bed.
Firefighters from the CVFD and FVFD worked together to get the driver of the truck out of the vehicle, who was successfully removed in stable condition and transported by PHI Medical Helicopter for further care.
