The Rice Lady Raiders have had their struggles in the sport of softball, that is no secret especially looking at last season.

Last season the Lady Raiders won a total of zero games and each loss that passed took its toll on the players and their confidence.

These girls always came to the field with a good attitude despite the struggles last season and came into this season with that same attitude. It has been a rough start to the year this season, but head coach Kylie Mica said she has noticed a positive change.

“Positives that I have seen are that the girls are working hard every day and giving 100% into every at bat and play on the field,” Mica said.

Mica said the effort the girls have been giving this season has helped them take huge steps in their development as softball players.

“Developmental growth that I have seen is they are starting to focus more on the little things more. Softball is all about hitting, fielding and throwing. These girls have grown so much from last year and are starting to turn double plays and have diving plays during games,” Mica said. “They have become more aggressive at the plate and getting more hits this year. They are buying into the culture that I have been trying to show the girls since I started coaching here at Rice Consolidated.”

The Lady Raiders’ growth is apparent because they just won their first game in the last 39 games against Luling. Mica said the team’s confidence is high right now, she said no matter the score or the outcome the girls are showing up ready to play, they just need to gain a little bit more experience.

“Every day the team is getting more and more trusting of their ability and aggressive at the plate,” Mica said. “They are aggressive on the bases and are looking at advancing to the next base.”

The Lady Raiders now look ahead to their next game against Hallettsville where they will look to get their second win of the season and grow their confidence even more.
